This
course will introduce students to the some of the major religious
traditions of the East focusing especially on Hinduism, Buddhism,
Sikhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The main focus of the course
will be to highlight the central ideas of these religious
traditions and how they contribute to the dominant world-view
and ethical outlook of each of these traditions. In particular
the course will try to highlight the ways in which Eastern
ideas simultaneously adapt to and yet resist the currents
of colonialism, globalisation, and late capitalism. Periodically
we will compare issues raised in these Eastern religions to
those that are raised within Western religious and philosophical
traditions. The readings will consist largely of primary materials
that have been translated into English.
Who
is this course designed for?
This course is designed as an introduction and presumes no
previous background in the study of religion or the traditions
we will be discussing.
