Denny Taylor is the Founder and Director of the International Center for Everybody's Child at Hofstra University with the intent to reach a stage of preparedness to provide sustainable support for children in response in these times of global crises and catastrophic events.
Dr. Taylor's education and research has always been interdisciplinary, spanning the arts and humanities as well as science. She studied philosophy, sociology, and fine arts at Roehampton University (formerly Whitelands College) London; psychology at Rutgers University; and anthropology, sociology, and education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Since completing her doctorate she has studied socio and psycholinguistics, and for the past ten years her scholarly work has focused on the psychiatric research on children and mass trauma.
Dr. Taylor has spent the last forty years working with children and their families who live challenging lives, including emergency support for teachers and children in the aftermath of catastrophic events, supports international educational projects.
Her ethnographic research currently focuses on the impact of catastrophic events on the lives of children and the social response of the educational community to mass trauma. Her fieldwork includes research in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. She provided first response support in the Gulf Region in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
She is currently writing a book entitled "The World's Children in Crisis," in which she asks the question: If we include consideration for the health and well-being of everybody's child in our response to the global crises taking place, how would that affect our present and future actions?
Denny Taylor is Professor and Doctoral Director of Literacy Studies at Hofstra University. She has been continuously engaged in ethnographic literacy research since 1977. She was received many awards for her research and she was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame in 2004.
