

The School of Education, Health and Human Services annually sponsors or co-sponsors approximately 50 professional development conferences. Many of these conferences are offered with two options: tuition-based graduate credit or fee-based, non-graduate credit. Fee-based attendance will often be approved by school districts for in-service credit. You are advised to consult your district administrator. The purpose of this conference is to celebrate,support, and encourage positive student leadership throughout Nassau County. Student team leaders will have the chance to meet their counterparts from other high schools and to share ideas about the meaning and significance of leadership. The day will include keynote addresses, focused dialogue between student leaders, coaches, athletic directors and principals, and training on communication skills. Each school will be asked to plan and initiate at least one activity that will have a positive impact on their school community. |

The School Leadership seminar series, now in its ninth year, provides a forum for high school principals, aspiring administrators, and college professors to meet and discuss issues of school leadership to encourage aspiring administrators to consider the high school principalship as a career goal, and explore the emerging challenges of the principalship. Three late afternoon sessions (4-7 p.m.) held on February 11, March 11 andApril 1, 2009 will focus on the principal's role in developing leadership capacities within the school constituencies of parents,students and teachers. Nassau County high school principals will lead each session providing current insights and applications related to each of the issues. Individuals participating in all three seminars will receive a Leadership Series Certificate from HOFSTRA University and Nassau County High School Principals' Association. |

This conference, co-sponsored by the Safe and Supportive Schools and Community Consortium, will heighten awareness of gangs and youth violence throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties and present tools and strategies that can be implemented in school and community venues. This year’s theme will focus on the culture of violence and the articulation of internal and external factors that contribute to it. Additionally, a ecological view and broad implications of prevention/intervention will be examined. |

The fifth annual Hofstra Network of Elementary Teachers (HNET) conference is open to all prospective and current elementary teachers and administrators. Workshops explore elementary and early childhood literacy, mathematics, science and social studies, as well as how to land your first teaching job. Admission is free. Teachers receive a staff development letter for submission to their districts. |

This year’s theme of the conference is Specializations in Art Therapy. The keynote speaker will start off the day talking about experiences using art therapy with people who have eating disorders. Workshops will follow and include art therapy and humor, body/mind, dialetical behavioral therapy, sandtray and play therapy, grief and loss and special art techniques developed for the clinical setting. The conference is suited for all those in the mental health profession. |

The Long Island Student Leadership Conference gives student leaders a special opportunity to learn from small group workshops, hear distinguished motivational speakers and participate in engaging conversations that allow students to exchange ideas and connect with other student leaders from across Long Island. There is also an advisor workshop for student council and student government advisors who wish to take their student group to the next level. |

Students in 7th and 8th grades will have an opportunity to discuss issues facing young people, issues not usually covered in the classroom, but inextricably linked to academic success. The conference is designed to provide a forum for student voices to be heard and for action plans to be developed that will promote access and equity for all students. |

This annual conference is an opportunity for students, scholars, practitioners, and all who are interested in young people and their literature to assemble for the following purposes: 1) to nurture our own needs for story and imagination; 2) to support the work of teachers as they find time and space to share literature in classrooms with their children; and 3) to create a culture of talk about books that might advocate for meaningful, thoughtful, and enjoyable experiences with children's and young adult literature. 11th Annual Sharing Senior Year Network Student Work Conference Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus. Fee: $30 per person for schools presenting, $45 per person for non-presenting schools; Pre-registration is required. |
This conference is for high school administrators, teachers, parents, and students, and will feature high school seniors. Students present their internships, research papers, service learning, and creative projects. A Senior Project Exhibition/Fair will take place after the presentations. The Nassau County High School Principals’ Association, Hofstra University Center for Secondary School Administrators and Supervisors, and Nassau BOCES Department of Career and Technical Education, co-sponsor the conference. |
