Getting Your Child Ready for Hofstra Sports Academy Summer Camps

Parents' Handbook

Please read this entire handbook. You may view it online or print it to keep on hand.
(File is in PDF format. If you do not have the Acrobat Reader to view PDF files, click here to download it.)

What to Bring

Each camper should wear daily: cotton T-shirt, athletic shorts, sneakers, and sweat socks. They should also bring a bag with a bathing suit, a towel and a water bottle. Please label all items: first and last name. Please do not send your child with jewelry or any electronics: Walkman, CD player, MP3 player, POD player, Game Boy, etc. Hofstra is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Medical Forms and Camp Infirmary

(Click here to print the Medical Form)
RNs and certified nurses are in our camp infirmary full time. Each camper must have a physical examination within one year prior to their first day of camp. The medical forms will be mailed to you after your child's registration is processed. These forms must be completed by your pediatrician and returned to the camp office by May 1. Any child needing medication must meet with our RNs with their medication at the camp infirmary on Thursday (from 1-3 p.m.) or Friday (from 10 a.m.-noon), prior to the first day we open camp. The camp infirmary is located in Room 131 of the Physical Fitness Center.

During the hot days, parents can ensure their child's comfort better by dressing them with:

  • Light-colored clothing – reflects radiant heat
  • Loose clothing – assists in evaporation of sweat

New York State law requires that each parent be aware of the following:

  1. It is mandatory for all camps to receive an operating permit from the Department of Health each year.
  2. Camps are required to be inspected twice yearly.
  3. Inspection reports are filed at the Nassau County Department of Health at 240 Old Country Road, Mineola (Room 507).
  4. Inquiries can be made Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m., at (516) 571-3680.

Hofstra Summer Camps' American Camping Association and Board of Health certifications are on display in the camp office.
