Brian Lehrer Show: Forum on Youth Issues

WNYC's Peabody-Award winning Brian Lehrer Show will be broadcasting in front of a live audience from Studio A in Dempster Hall on October 15, 2008, 10am to 12pm. The first hour of the panel discussion will preview that evening's presidential debate at Hofstra University and the current news from the campaign trail with leading journalists, academics, and representatives from both campaigns.

In the second hour, as part of the "Thirty Issues in Thirty Days" series, the discussion will center on college affordability, student loans, and other issues important to today's college students. For more information on WNYC and the Brian Lehrer Show, visit www.wnyc.org.

Bailed Out or Bogged Down: Economic Challenges Facing the Next President

A press briefing and webcast hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations and the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the Presidency at Hofstra University.

Panelists will be:

• Edward Alden, Bernard L. Schwartz Senior Fellow, CFR, former Washington bureau chief at the Financial Times. Latest book, The Closing of the American Border, examines U.S. visa and border policies in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. His expertise is U.S. economic competitiveness, U.S. trade policy, visa and immigration policy.
• Brad W. Setser, Fellow for Geoeconomics, CFR, applied international economist with experience at the U.S. Treasury and the International Monetary Fund. Currently examining central bank reserve growth, sovereign wealth funds, and the political implications of emerging market financing of the United States. His expertise is central bank reserves and sovereign wealth funds, IMF policy, emerging market economies.

Learn about the issues that matter most to college students!  Student clubs will educate their fellow students about the issues they care about in the upcoming election through interactive and educational activities.  Healthy refreshments will be served.

  The CNN *Election EXPRESS Yourself* tour will be rolling onto campus on Debate day, October 15. It is an on-the-ground, interactive touch-point for CNN consumers. CNN invites consumers to become informed and express their passionate views around the 2008 election. CNN's retro Airstream communicates that message with a digital 21st century edge via LCD message boards atop the vehicle, televisions for live feeds and prerecordded content, computer stations for interactive polling on current issues and CNN.com internet access. Consumers will be able to customize political memorabilia as takeaways, answer political trivia for CNN branded premiums (hats, shirts, magnets, watter bottles) and expres their passion via the political graffiti wall. Participants may also record their political passions in the CNN Video Booths. These self operated stations record 30 seconds to 1 minute of video that will be then uploaded to cnn.com, where consumers can view their video with their personal access code. | close |

  • Can be used for live c-span programming
  • Has been on the campaign trail for more than 12 months talking with students from across the country about the historic campaign. | more |

    The C-SPAN Campaign 2008 bus will be open to public for brief tours and educational programs. Students are invited to board the bus for 15-minute tours and discussions about the 2008 election. For more information, go to www.campaign2008bus.org.

    The 45-foot bus is equipped with mobile multi-media demonstration centers and TV production units that can be used as studios during live programs, such as C-SPAN's Washington Journal. This allows C-SPAN the opportunity to interview students, authors, journalists and politicians aboard the Buses from anywhere in the country. | close |

  • The VOTE SMART BUS is criss-crossing the nation telling people about the Voter's Self-Defense System. The Project Vote Smart tour staff will provide live demonstrations, distribute brochures and other information regarding how and where to register and vote. | more |

    The VOTE SMART BUS will be coming our way on October 15 for debate day. It is criss-crossing the nation telling people about the Voter's Self-Defense System and providing free literature. It will continue to travel the country up until the Nov. 2008 election. A digital projection screen will offer viewers an opportunity to learn about the VOTE SMART organization. There will also be laptop computers available to view the Web site.   • Educates students on ways America can break free from its dependence on oil by investing in clean domestic energy sources such as wind and solar.
• BioTour at Hofstra!
  • The BIOTOUR BUS is home to six crew members and has been converted to run on waste vegetable oil, use solar electricity and be comfortable for living. Activities focus around educating the principles of sustainability and motivating you to take action increasing the change our society needs
• The AT&T'S ROCK THE VOTE MOBILE ELECTIONS BUS
  
  • Equipped with a "Framerz" booth where students can take photos and frame themselves with images of celebrities and presidential candidates, and will feature a Guitar Hero demo station.

• Choose the Student Center Theater (Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus) for a pre-debate panel conversation about how the candidates are preparing for the debate and what to watch for during the debate.
• Choose the Student Center main dining room (Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus) to hear students talk their point of view about the issues and the debate.
• Choose the Netherlands cafeteria (South Campus) for a variety of trivia games, art projects, and other hands-on activities.
• Choose Hofstra USA (South Campus) to hear student bands and other entertainment at this pre-debate party.

The debate will be shown on a large screen at 9 p.m. at each party. Refreshments will be provided.
