Super Tuesday seemed almost beside the point at Hofstra University's primary-watching party last night. Every few minutes, a student wandered up to the five flat-screen televisions lining the room - one of the Hempstead university's studios in its Communication Department - and stared intently.

Hofstra's will focus on foreign policy and will be the first general election presidential debate in New York since 1960.

Along with focusing attention on Hofstra and Long Island, the debate could mark a homecoming for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) or former New York City GOP Mayor Rudy Giuliani, or both - provided they survive the presidential primaries and become their parties' nominees.

Hofstra University on Long Island is going to host a presidential debate on October 15, 2008, according to a knowledgeable source.

Attending the brief public portion of the university's meeting with the debate commission's production team were [Thomas Suozzi], state Sens. Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) and Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) and Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray. Hempstead Village Mayor Wayne Hall attended the news conference, but not the meeting.
[Marty Slutsky] was accompanied by two other debate producers, Tammy Johnston and Rory Davies. Secret Service agents and Nassau County Police Insp. Robert Turk also attended.

"It was such an invigorating intellectual exercise that it persuaded me it would be a great educational experience for the entire community," [Stuart Rabinowitz] said. "Many people talk about the lack of engagement among the young in the political process. This is the antidote to that." Last year Hofstra launched a $1.5-million center for presidential studies.
Hofstra is competing against previous hosts including North Carolina's Wake Forest, Washington University in St. Louis, Arizona State University, Centre College in Danbury, Ky., and University of Miami, which hosted the last debate in 2004.
Hofstra's only competition from the Northeast is Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The last presidential debate in the region was held in Boston in 2000. But Hofstra officials say New York hasn't had a debate since 1960 when John F. Kennedy and then- Vice President Richard M. Nixon met in a Manhattan TV studio.
