ATA PROGRESS REPORT

ACADEMIC TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENT (ATA)

    • Executive Dean
    • Faculty Computing Support (FCS)
    • Instructional Technology Facilitator Program
    • Pioneer Program

MISSION (draft)

    • Provides focused voice for faculty on Instructional Technology
    • Advocates and facilitates integration of IT into curriculum where appropriate
    • Provides IT training & support for faculty at all levels
    • Communicates and coordinates faculty use of IT
    • Develops and supports Distance Learning options
    • Develops IT vision in consultation with faculty

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (3 months)

    • Service contracts and sweeps for C.V. Starr Hall and Tech. Enriched Classrooms
    • Budget plan for departmental lab replacement and upgrade; need for lab statistics
    • Blackboard training for faculty (181 sites; 51 new); dedicated Hofstra server
    • Technology bonus; responding faculty contacted by joint teams of facilitators and FC staff; 29 faculty created web presence for first time; 21 new web sites.

IN PROCESS:

    • Decision about Classroom Management Platforms (Blackboard, WebCT, Prometheus)
    • Filling Distance Education and Emerging Instructional Technology position
    • Defining roles/responsibilities of Facilitators and FCS staff ; holding joint meetings
    • Review of Pioneer Program:  (Ralph Zalma on 12/12; proposal by Alex Sharland)
    • Senate sub-committee reviewing Technology Enhanced Classrooms
    • Matching faculty IT needs & equipped classrooms; as needed scheduling
    • Development of ATA Web page
    • Videotaping faculty presentations and making available on ATA web page
    • Gathering faculty input:  SCAC, School IT committees; CAIR; open hearings
    • Reorganization of hiring & training ITAs
    • Standardizing faculty information in Allaire
    • IT service center for faculty
    • Faculty & ITA workshops over January break
    • Survey of faculty teaching in C.V. Starr Hall

ISSUES FOR CAIR DISCUSSION:

    • Upgrading Operating System: Windows 98, 2000, XP?
    • Browsers: support both Explorer and Netscape?
    • Ordering hardware & software in a timely manner
    • Customization vs. standardization; creating new images in a timely manner
    • MAC support
    • Increasing speed & ease of revising web pages in Allaire (H. Hastings)
