| Peer
Teacher Program Guidelines
PURPOSE
The Peer Teacher Program is designed to enhance the quality of education offered
to Hofstra students by involving our very best students in undergraduate teaching.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The peer teacher can help the faculty member in the classroom and in relating
to students. The duties of peer teachers can include such things as tutoring,
leading class discussions, lecturing, and supervising student work. All activities
must be under the active supervision of the faculty member involved. The duties
should constitute a valuable learning experience. Peer teachers must NOT be
asked to do routine clerical work or to develop, proctor, or grade tests or
examinations.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible, a student must:
a. be a major in the department;
b. be a junior or senior;
c. have an average of at least 3.5 in major courses.
Note that exceptions may be made
for FYC courses.
If you as a faculty member wish to have a student work with you as a peer teacher,
applications are due in May for the Fall semester and in December for the Spring
semester. For exact dates please contact the Office
of the Provost, 516-463-5400. To nominate a student the supervising faculty
member must complete the online
application.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
The selection will be made on the basis of the student's record, your recommendation,
and the description of the tasks to be performed. If selected, the student will
receive an e-mail informing him/her of the honor. Both the faculty member and
the peer teacher will be asked to complete an online evaluation form about the
program at the end of the semester. An honorarium of $200 will be processed
at the end of the semester for each peer teacher who completes the program.
