Maureen Miletta

Meet Our Faculty

Maureen Miletta, Ed.D.
Associate Professor of Curriculum and Teaching
School of Education and Allied Human Services

"I teach children's literature and writing," Professor Miletta says. "Students today don't write or read as much as they should, even those contemplating a teaching career, but I try to get them to explore the imaginary worlds of literature, to engage in meaningful dialogue about them and to search for words to write about their discoveries." What does Professor Miletta hope her students get out of her course? "I want them to become lifelong readers and writers so that they can then effectively help their own students to become the same." Classes in the School of Education and Allied Human Services range from 10 to 20 students, taught in the technology-rich Hagedorn Hall, where "there are countless opportunities for innovative teaching techniques." Asked what she loves about teaching, Professor Miletta replies, "First, I love the freedom we have at Hofstra and, second, the diversity of the student body. It's fun to teach and have students understand the importance of being educators in today's world, people who want to open up the possibilities for youngsters. Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers a person can pursue. I've been an educator for 55 years, and I'm still as excited and passionate about teaching as I was 55 years ago."
