Andrew Schuetz knew in the sixth grade that he wanted to own his own business. When he found that there was such a thing as an entrepreneurship major, he thought, “Wow! This is perfect.” For Andrew, deciding on a school meant choosing among the relatively few colleges and universities that offered an entrepreneurship major. “I sat in on a class at my top three choices,” he said, “and my classroom experience at Hofstra [in Dr. Hayes’s entrepreneurship class] just blew me away. It seemed like the professor knew the students on a personal level. There were only about 20 students in the class. It was just what I wanted.”
Andrew’s first year at Hofstra has been, in a word, “fantastic. There are so many opportunities here,” he said. “There are 150 clubs on campus, there’s the city, it’s been a great experience.” Andrew has been active on campus, talking to prospective students as an ambassador in the Admission Office and joining Spirit Support – even dressing as the school mascot at sports events. “I get to be Willie,” he said. “It’s fun.” “I can’t stress enough how important it is to get involved,” he continued. “Once you get involved, you start meeting more students.”
As a first-year student, Andrew enrolled in a first-year cluster that included Economics 2 and Math 40. “The cluster was amazing,” he said. “The courses worked really well together and they used the city as a resource. It was also a nice way to meet some students, especially since they all had a common interest in business. That made a difference to me, since I come from Washington state.”
Other courses that stood out for Andrew were his English courses with Adjunct Assistant Professor Angela Hughes and a business computer course with Dr. Laurie Harvey. “Professor Hughes took me under her wing,” he said. “She opened her doors during office hours and encouraged students to come in and just talk. I’m amazed at how personal the professors are with the students, how small the classes are, and all the activities that are available on campus.”
Andrew is looking forward to the Educate ’08 events leading up to the final presidential debate, which will be held at Hofstra on October 15. “Having the debate here is absolutely amazing,” he said. Plans for next year also include an internship in the fashion industry. “I really want to go into the fashion business on the business side,” he said.
