Sekiya Dorsett
Film Production Major
Sekiya, who's leaning toward a career in radio - "with film on the side" - said she chose Hofstra because "it allowed me to do a multi-approach to communications. I wanted radio, TV, film. I wanted to try everything, although I found I didn't like TV."
In fact, her favorite thing at Hofstra right now is WRHU. "I've met a lot of people there. The station improves you professionally, and I was able to start up a show on my own. The Communications Department gives a very hands-on approach to learning. The professors are very committed to their jobs, ensuring that you get the real facts behind things," Sekiya said. "Classes are very interesting and informative in terms of applying to the real world, especially in radio class." Moreover, in working at WRHU, she has found that "they treat you like you're working at a real network." That, she felt, can only help when it comes time to enter the workforce.
"Diversity is very important," said Sekiya, who is very active in Lamda Pi Eta (the Communications Honor Society) and Collegiate Women of Color. She likes the fact that "communications tends to be more diverse." Minoring in computer science, Sekiya touts Hofstra's technological capabilities. "Even in film, we have the best computers and editing software."
