First Year Experience

Your life on Campus

Find and focus your true strengths outside the classroom

The offices that make up the Division of Student Affairs are dedicated to helping new students acclimate to the Hofstra campus and adjust to the college life experience. Services range from helping familiarize newcomers with the University to offering time management and study skills sessions.

A student's journey at Hofstra begins with the New Student Orientation program. This program includes Summer Orientation, the first official induction into the Hofstra community. New students are introduced to everything from student services to faculty and academic advisers to the overall campus culture. Students attend model classes, receive guidance from deans in the Advisement Office, and complete the registration process.

There are several three-day/two-night summer orientation sessions in June, July and August. New students are invited to stay in the residence halls as they learn all about the University - from academic resources to computing services. At the same time, family members attend their own orientation session on the first day.

"Living on campus has made my college experience complete at Hofstra. After living at home for 18 years, I had to adjust to living with roommates, and managing my time effectively. I learned a lot about myself, and how to work with others from living on campus. The residence halls are a great way to meet new people, and to make the transition into college a little bit easier." - Ashley Troutman, Class of 2007

Each incoming student is assigned an assistant dean from University Advisement, who reaches out to new students throughout the first semester, answers questions regarding general academic concerns and acts as a resource, providing direction to campus support services that can aid with the transition to the college environment.

Welcome Week brings together all new students at Hofstra to continue acclimating students to campus, complete with social and academic programs, an activities fair and trips to New York city and in the local community..

The First-Year FOCUS (Focusing on College and Understanding Social Issues) program brings noted speakers to campus to discuss key issues for first-year students.

The Center for University Advisement oversees a variety of services designed to support academic progress from the time interest in enrolling at Hofstra is expressed until graduation. University Advisement provides general, non-major academic advising, long-term academic planning, and academic support for Hofstra students.

University Advisement works closely with first-year students in planning the first semester of classes. Deans help interpret Hofstra's degree requirements, explore course possibilities according to each students educational interests, and connect them with faculty members and upper-class students for advice on pursuing studies within specific majors.

On the last day of the summer orientation program, new students register for classes and leave the program knowing what courses they'll be taking in the semester ahead. During the school year, University Advisement continues to work with students to answer questions about general academic matters.

The Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center houses many of the departments in the Division of Student Affairs, including the Dean of Students and numerous student clubs and organizations.
