Students who take clustered classes together make friends more quickly, form study groups, and generally have an easier time adjusting to college life.
But some students want more. They'd like a stronger connection between their academic goals and their extracurricular activities. They hope college will introduce them to other students who share their passion for a subject and who will challenge them in new and exciting ways.
For that reason, Honors Students are invited to consider Honors Housing or any of the other living learning communities listed below.
HONORS HOUSE:
During your first year in Honors College you may want to enhance your experience by living in honors housing in either Liberty/Republic Halls or in the honors section of VanderPoel. Most Honors College first year students do!
Honors residential communities are active, dynamic, and engaged. They are designed to help entering students get off to a great start (about 1/2 the rooms are occupied by first-year students). There are always a significant percentage of returning residential students, with many opting to remain there all four years.
The advantages of honors housing are easy to see.
Since Honors College students are active in almost every club and organization on campus students in honors housing find it easy to make connections and get involved with intramural teams, student government, the newspaper, and various service and career oriented clubs.
Students who choose one of the living/learning communities listed below reside together in the Netherlands Complex in a house with 55 other first-year residential students. These students enjoy class-based activities as well as events within their living/learning community.
Commuting students who register for First-Year Connections clusters and seminars associated with these residential options may also participate in the activities associated with these living/learning communities.
ARTS HOUSE is for students who are interested in studying drama, dance, music, graphic design or fine arts, or just have a passion for the arts. Students who plan to major in one of these areas are encouraged to join this eclectic community of creative individuals!
HEALTH SCIENCES HOUSE is home to students considering premedical studies, pre-veterinary studies, pre-dental studies, physician assistant studies, community health or clinical psychology.
MATH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING HOUSE is home to students who have an interest in an array of science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines.
AMERICAN POLITICS HOUSE is designed for students who are keenly interested in politics and the challenges that our elected officials face. Students of all majors and political affiliations are welcome; this house thrives on democratic debate about the responsibilities of our nation’s leaders.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT HOUSE is home to students who share a passion for political and social issues on the local, regional and national levels. All interested students are encouraged to apply ... just bring your desire to be involved!
LEADERSHIP HOUSE is a new community that offers students the opportunity to explore their potential, while encouraging active participation in the campus community. Students take an in-depth look at leadership development and learn about decision making, team building, ethics, goal setting, communication skills and group dynamics.
WELLNESS HOUSE is an innovative community that promotes and celebrates healthy living options, and balance in all aspects of students’ lives. This house explores connections between one’s spiritual, physical, intellectual and emotional well-being and welcomes students of all majors. Residents agree to live in accordance with the standards and expectations set by both the University and the community.
The learning experience is not limited to the four walls of the classroom, or even to the borders of the campus. Through these energetic living/learning communities, Hofstra students are exposed to environments that are intellectually stimulating, supportive and conducive to building lasting friendships and a memorable first-year college experience.
