Knowing that the first year of college is a crucial time of adjustment, one in which students are anticipating new experiences both academically and socially, Hofstra has enhanced the first-year experience. The Honors College first-year program provides a welcoming, enriched environment and academic challenge for our most academically accomplished students. New College welcomes its first-year students with an individualized curriculum (that each student helps to design) together with a strong sense of community. Our School for University Studies is designed especially for entering students who have not yet fully demonstrated their potential for academic success, and provides extra support and motivation!

Most of our entering students will find exciting possibilities and vibrant choices in our expanded First-Year Connections Program. Connections has proven so successful that in fall 2007 this option is available to all freshmen. The cornerstone of this initiative is classes connected by a common theme, such as "Physical Education, Sport Sciences and Cultural Diversity" or "Science and Science Fiction," the latter linking an astronomy course with others in English and composition.

Hofstra offers four dynamic and unique distinct learning choices for our first-year students allowing them to experience a smooth transition from high school to college with the abundance of resources that Hofstra offers.

First-Year Connections enables students to become better acquainted with classmates and faculty. Connections professors are available to assist with advisement, helping ease students' anxiety about classes and what future direction to take. Socially, Connections professors organize group dinners and other events.

In recent years, participation in Connections has influenced some students to pursue philosophy as a minor, for instance, or to become more interested in history. Another important facet of the first-year experience is Hofstra's new thematic "living/learning communities" for resident students.

Beyond the first year, Hofstra continues its commitment to a broad array of choices, whether it's our resources or our programs. Undergraduates choose from more than 140 programs of study.

As you can see, the possibilities and experiences are endless here at Hofstra, as are the opportunities for your success. I look forward to welcoming you to the Hofstra community.

Sincerely,
Herman A. Berliner, Ph.D.
