Undergraduate Prospectus

New College

Unique. Fresh. Unconventional ? just like our students.

New College of Hofstra takes its name from the Oxford University college from which it was modeled. Innovative, challenging and thoroughly rewarding, whatever the field of study, New College gives students a multi-centered approach to learning, offering special lectures, individualized attention, internships and independent study.

Rather than following a typical semester?s schedule, New College enrollees divide their courses into two 7-1/2 week sessions. Since there are no classes on Wednesdays, students can take the extra day to catch up on studies, research, attend any of the numerous Hofstra exhibitions or plays, or simply spend time with a professor going over course work. New College truly lives up to the Aristotelian ideal that education fulfills the potential for good in every student.

The benefits of a small college ? the advantages of a metropolitan university.

Study Abroad

Studying abroad is one of the most exciting ways to learn about the world. A study abroad program helps students understand the changing demographic, technological and ecological patterns in the physical world as well as corresponding changes in economic, political and social structures.

You do not have to be an international studies major to take advantage of international study programs. New College encourages all students to participate in its extensive range of study abroad options. These include the Odyssey Programs, in which small groups of students travel and study with New College faculty in western and eastern Europe, Egypt, Mexico or other locations. Other programs, including those at the University of Amsterdam or Oxford University, offer students opportunities to live and study abroad for up to one academic year.
