What could be more rewarding ? than giving back to the community that gave so much to you?
At the School of Education and Allied Human Services, we teach you how.
A kindergarten teacher in a poverty-stricken neighborhood ? a marriage counselor who specializes in substance abuse cases ? a creative arts therapist or corporate fitness adviser. These are just a few of the hundreds of goals you can fulfill with a School of Education and Allied Human Services degree.
A number of options exist for students wishing to specialize in education. Those interested in early childhood education (birth through grade 2), elementary education (grade1 through grade 6), or adolescence education (grade 7 through grade 12) maintain a liberal arts focus, graduating with a bachelor of arts, while also qualifying for state certification to teach at their chosen developmental level. Others, who wish to specialize in a specific subject area such as physical education, health education, music education or fine arts education, major in the area they would like to teach while taking their teacher preparation program leading to a bachelor of science in education. Students also qualify for state certification to teach their specialty in prekindergarten through grade 12.
The community healthcare education, athletic training and exercise specialist programs allow students to prepare for work as community, corporate or professional sports consultants, planners or administrators providing fitness/wellness education, conditioning, and preventive and rehabilitative treatment.
All programs within the School of Education and Allied Human Services provide students with enriching, hands-on experience through field placements, internships, practicums and/or student teaching. As part of the curriculum requirements, students work with children and adults of all ages at Long Island schools and local community agencies, as well as at selected locations in New York City. Students are taught in state-of-the-art facilities, including science and computer laboratories. Nationally recognized and experienced faculty of the School of Education and Allied Human Services believe in the principle of working one-on-one with students, and they exemplify this principle in and out of the classroom.
The Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute, conveniently located on campus, offers future teachers an opportunity to gain experience in a supervised, enjoyable environment. Students may also be involved in Kappa Delta Pi and The Social Studies Network where they can further explore their interests among peers.
