1958

Alan Plotz (B.A.) of Dix Hills, NY, and his wife, Marilyn (B.S.-Ed. '61), are the recipients of the Marjorie and James M. Shuart Alumni Family Award, which recognizes a family of two or more alumni who have shown outstanding dedication and service to Hofstra. Alan's sister, Betty (Plotz) Fink (B.S.Ed. '65) is also a Hofstra alumna. This award is given in honor of President Emeritus James M. Shuart '53 and his wife, Marjorie Shuart '60. The award was bestowed upon the Plotz family at the Alumni Organization Annual Meeting, held May 21, at Hofstra University... Suad Smolinsky (B.A.) is president of Smolinsky Properties Inc. She started this company after her teaching days and has been a broker for 20 years. It is a full-service real estate brokerage and appraisal service specializing in the towns of Woodmere and Hewlett. She is married with two children and enjoys golf, tennis and the arts.

Karl and Ann Weiler Catching up with...
Karl (?60) and Ann Weiler (?60)

What they are doing now:
Karl is CEO and chairman of the board for the Weiler Corporation.This family-owned business began as a manufacturer of precision miniature brushes on Long Island in 1944. Weiler Corporation now has four manufacturing facilities employing more than 600 personnel.

Weiler Corporation was awarded the International Supply Association's esteemed American Eagle Award for Overall Excellence in 2001 and 2004. In 2001, 2003 and 2005, Weiler won American Eagle Awards for community activities.

Ann was an elementary school teacher for many years. She was marketing manager for Weiler Corporation from 1980 through 1991 and now serves on its board of directors.

How they met:
Karl says, "We met at Hofstra during our junior year. One of my fraternity brothers [Upsilon Gamma Alpha] was on a date with Ann at Ryan's Pub. I was introduced to her at a party, and the rest is history."

Classmates with whom they would most like to reconnect:
Eric Weller '60, Danny Hanlon '59 and Dominick Sampogna '60.

The lowdown:
They have three children and four grandchildren and reside in Cresco, Pennsylvania.

Sheldon Bernstein (B.A.) of Las Vegas, NV, started "Clark County Choppers," manufacturers of custom motorcycles in Las Vegas. He also works in real estate and is a network operations technician with Mpower Communications. Sheldon's youngest daughter is 2 years old... Marilyn (Serota) Plotz (B.S. Ed.) of Dix Hills, NY, and husband Alan (B.A. '58) are the recipients of the Marjorie and James M. Alan Nierenberg (B.A.) of Wilton, CT, wrote Winning the Interview Game–Everything You Need to Know to Land the Job, published in May 2005 by The American Management Association (AMACOM). The book is an interview primer for new graduates through senior executives. Alan has his own executive search firm and coaches individuals on how to find a job...

What she is doing now:
Working as a production editor on the Scholastic News magazines at Scholastic, Inc. Audrey is living in Forest Hills, New York.

Hofstra student activities:
"I was a reporter, writer, and copy editor on the newspaper, The Chronicle."

How did she decide to attend Hofstra?
"I wanted to go to a liberal arts college that wasn't too far away from home, but where I could live in the dorms."

Her favorite Hofstra memories:
Staying up all night in The Chronicle office to get out the issue every week.

Frank J. Maresca Catching up with...
Frank J. Maresca (B.B.A., 1980)

What he's doing now:
Frank is chief executive officer and president of Bear Stearns Funds Management Inc. (BSFM), which provides administration services to mutual funds, closed-end funds and other pooled investment vehicles. He is also a managing director of Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc. and vice president and treasurer to The Bear Stearns Funds. Frank has been involved with the administration, finance, tax and regulatory functions in the investment company industry for more than 20 years, beginning with his career at Price Waterhouse in 1980.

First job out of college:
He started with Price Waterhouse, doing audits of investment companies' mutual funds.

Early in his career, Frank was an assistant vice president of Deutsche Bank Capital Corporation from 1984 to 1987; vice president of Bear, Stearns & Co., Inc. from 1987 to 1988; first vice president and director of the Funds Administration Division of Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management Inc. ("Mitchell Hutchins") and chief financial officer of the Mitchell Hutchins fund group (holding the position of treasurer to PaineWebber mutual funds) from 1988 to March 1992.

Frank's favorite Hofstra professor:
Ralph Polimeni, who currently serves as dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business.

Song that most reminds him of college:

Philip Franzese (B.B.A.) of Mastic Beach, NY, is director of marketing for All Island Media. He earned an M.B.A. from Dowling College and owns Marketing Magic, an advertising and event promotion agency in Stony Brook. Philip is the creator of the Patriot's Day Festival on Long Island and the Long Island Soap Box Derby. He has been married for 42 years, and has two children and four grandchildren...

Jerry Landau (B.A.) of Scottsdale, AZ, is director of government affairs for the Arizona Supreme Court and has been appointed a judge pro-tem... Jeffrey Wurst (B.S.Ed., M.A. '74) of Rockville Centre, NY, is the author of a travel article that was published in the current issue of the New York Law Journal Magazine. In the article, Jeffrey describes his search with his wife, Vera, for missing clues about her family, which was torn apart by the Holocaust. They were successful in finding Vera's grandmother's grave in an old Jewish cemetery in Vienna and were able to repair it and add her name to it...

Gail D. Brooks (B.A.) was honored by the Boy Scouts at the 10th Annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Spirit of Scouting Education Reception and Dinner in Atlantic City. Gail is superintendent of Pleasantville Public Schools in Pleasantville, New Jersey... Terrance O'Connor (B.A.) of West Babylon, NY, was selected as the 2004-2005 New York State High School Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State. Terrance is principal of Wantagh High School in the Wantagh School District... Alese Owen Pechter (M.S.Ed) and her husband, Morton, were recently honored by the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences in Houston, TX. They received the NOGI, which is one of the highest honors bestowed by the ocean interests and diving community. By receiving this award, the Pechters join ranks of such notables as Jacques Cousteau, Robert Ballard, Sylvia Earle, Lloyd Bridges, James Cameron and Peter Benchley. The Pechters were honored for their work as photojournalists, with the most notable collection of their work being underwater photography. They are fellows in the Explorers Club and listed in Pioneers of the Diving World. They have published an award-winning children's book on the beauties of the underwater world, What's in the Deep?, which is used as a marine biology text in schools and libraries around the country. Alese is also a charter member of the Women Divers Hall of Fame...

Adrienne Borbely (B.B.A.) of West Hempstead, NY, is teaching private piano at Adelphi University, as well as accompanying classes in the university's Dance Department. She is the organist for the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Paul in Hempstead, New York, and the pianist for the Waldorf Chamber Ensemble at Weill Hall in New York City. Adrienne and her husband, Joseph, have two daughters... Lydia Gladstone (B.A.) of Greenlawn, NY, starred in the Broadhollow production of Gypsy at Centre Stage, Rockville Centre. Lydia played Mama Rose, and her daughter Melanie (attending Hofstra now) played Louise, the performer who transforms herself into a glamorous stripper... Lynne Perez Patten (B.A.) of Vero Beach, FL, celebrated her five-year wedding anniversary to Dr. John M. Patten, Jr....

Gabriel H. Gluck (B.A.) of Westfield, NJ, was part of the news team that earned a Pulitzer Prize for the Newark Star-Ledger for its coverage of Governor James E. McGreevey's unexpected resignation announcement last August. Gabriel succeeded in tracking down and interviewing the elusive Peter Harvey (New Jersey attorney general)... Kathleen Himler (B.A., B.B.A. '86) of Upper St. Clair, PA, worked for 13 years as a high-tech salesperson with NCR and AT&T handling Fortune 500 corporate customers. She now stays home with her two sons, ages 7 and 9, is involved in a Bible study class and teaches a fourth grade CCD class. Her husband, Al, is vice president of product management and marketing for a Pittsburgh-based software company... Ronald Paushter (M.S.Ed.) of Lakewood, NJ, returned to New Jersey in March 2005 from his first trip to South America, where he taught in Peru for two months...

Richard Steinberg, M.D. (B.A.) is the assistant medical director of imaging services at Peninsula Hospital Center in Rockaway, NY. He received his degree and medical training at Downstate Medical Center and is board certified in radiology, and has co-authored several published articles drawing on his expertise in ultrasound and CT scanning. Robert Davenport (M.A.) of Queens Village, NY, retired after 18 years as a speech teacher at a Bronx high school, ended his private practice as a speech pathologist, and will soon move to Florida... E. David Woycik, Jr., Esq. (B.A., J.D. '80) of Garden City, NY, was honored by the Hofstra University School of Law Alumni Association at the Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner on March 16, at the Princeton Club in Manhattan. The Law School recently announced the naming of the E. David Woycik, Jr. Intensive Trial Techniques Program, which educates and trains law students in the skills of trial advocacy.
