Victor Cantone (B.A. '79)
Victor Cantone was a widely respected, nationally syndicated political cartoonist listed in Who's Who in American Art. Prior to being on staff at the Daily News for more than three decades (1951-1991), he was on staff at Newsday from 1954 to1959 as a newsroom cartoonist and courtroom artist. He was nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize, and his caricatures of Presidents Johnson, Ford and Reagan are on display at their respective presidential libraries. Though already acclaimed in his profession, Vic enrolled at Hofstra in the 1970s, declaring a major in political science. According to his Newsday obituary, his plan in returning to school was to "deepen his understanding of politics and to enhance his cartoons' impact." He died on April 2, 2005, of Lou Gehrig's disease.
