


December featured three concerts by the Department of Music. The first two days of the month featured performances by the Hofstra Chorale and Orchestra, directed by David Fryling and David Ramael. The Hofstra Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, directed by Peter Loel Boonshaft, performed on December 8. The last concert of 2007 took place on December 11, featuring the Hofstra Chorus and String Ensemble, directed by Edward Norris and David Ramael.
December 3 Hofstra’s School of Communication launched NewsHub, a cutting-edge converged newsroom and multimedia classroom in Dempster Hall that allows students to work across media platforms. The ceremony featured an address by Emmy Award-winning former television anchor/correspondent Carol Jenkins and Hofstra Trustee James E. Quinn ’74, president of Tiffany & Co. and a Hofstra communication arts graduate.
December 5 Larry Silverstein, developer of the Freedom Towers at the site of the former World Trade Center, delivered the keynote address at the Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies conference Vision and Persistence: How Strategic Projects Can Still Be Built. Conference co-sponsors were Hofstra Law School and the Institute of Real Estate at Hofstra University.
December 6 and 7 The mental health of college students, which became the subject of nationwide discussion following the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech last spring, was examined at the conference Understanding College Student Mental Health. The event was hosted by the Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center and co-sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, Student Counseling Services and the Hofstra Cultural Center.
December 20 Approximately 700 undergraduate, graduate and law students took part in midyear commencement at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Honorees and guest speakers were David Neeleman, chairman of the board of JetBlue Airways Corporation, and Hofstra Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law Eric J. Schmertz. Mr. Neeleman received a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, and Professor Schmertz received a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
