Dr. Michael J. Barnes earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical and school psychology from Hofstra University in 1976 and 1980, respectively, after obtaining a B.A. in mathematics from Colgate University.
After serving as a school psychologist for Westbury Public Schools on Long Island, he joined the Hofstra faculty in 1980. Dr. Barnes, currently an associate professor, teaches courses in clinical psychology, statistics and research methods. He is a charter member of Hofstra’s Center for Teaching and Scholarly Excellence and serves as the statistical consultant for the Hofstra faculty. He received the Hofstra University Distinguished Teaching Award in 1985 and 2005, and the Person of the Year Award, presented by the Hofstra University Minority Women’s Task Force. He is also past director of Hofstra’s undergraduate psychology program.
His research interests include the psychology of and attitudes toward people of color; nonintellective correlates of academic achievement, especially for students of color; and the teachings of psychology, especially those courses that address quantitative methods or multicultural issues in psychology. He has been published in various journals, including the Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment, Anthrozoos, Adolescence and Teaching of Psychology, and has written several book chapters addressing topics such as the teaching of courses in meta-analysis and therapy delivery to clients of color. In addition, he has made numerous presentations and held workshops both locally and at national conventions.
A licensed psychologist and statistical consultant, Dr. Barnes has been in private practice for more than 20 years.
