Read More About the Debate

Tyler GreenPopeOn October 15 the eyes of the world were watching Hofstra University for the third and final presidential debate. Being able to be part of such a history-making event was an experience I will always remember.

For me it all started last year when I was a freshman and was asked to be the student chair for the Educate ’08 Committee. When I accepted the position, I didn’t realize what an amazing experience this would be for me. I went to many meetings to help plan for the Educate ’08 events, then was able to attend many of them and meet the guest speakers afterwards.

Even as the actual debate day got closer and closer, the enormity of the event did not really hit me. It finally did sink in while I was at a Debate Watch party on campus for the second debate. At the end the moderator said the next debate would be at Hofstra, and the room went wild. After that, everywhere you looked on campus there were posters, fliers and all sorts of other Debate ’08 memorabilia.

All my hard work paid off in the end, when I was granted the opportunity to work for CNN the week they were here. I was a runner helping out the crew with anything they needed. Then I was assigned to be one of four VIP escorts in the debate hall. I was able to meet Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, to name a few.

Overall, it is hard to explain how memorable this whole experience was, but I know that it will be something I will remember forever. Being able to talk about what a great experience the debate was always puts a huge smile on my face.
