Sophomore, Broadcast Journalism
Having the opportunity to work with various members of the media as Hofstra hosted the third and final presidential debate was the opportunity of a lifetime. For those who watched the debates from home or with friends, you will never realize the work that goes into getting this 90-minute debate on the air.
My greatest memory was acting as a stand-in for the moderator of the debate. It was interesting to watch how the camera crews worked out every angle, and even brightened or dimmed a certain light. As one camera zoomed in on the chair Barack Obama would soon occupy, a worker would run on stage and repaint a portion of the background because it was not “blue enough.”
Since coming to Hofstra and joining WRHU-FM Radio Hofstra University, I’ve been working hard on becoming a journalist. It was interesting to see Peter Haskell of WCBS 880AM ask me a question and then, out of my long response, pull a quick sound bite just to give listeners some idea of what the room was like. It was an experience that will never and can never be matched.
I think I speak for many when I say that the greatest moment for many of us at Hofstra was watching the candidates walk on stage, sit down and each thank Hofstra for hosting the debate. The feeling of Hofstra Pride came alive that night – not that it was never here, but it came alive for the world to witness and admire.
