HOFSTRA ROLLS TO 6-0 WIN OVER STONY BROOK
Stony Brook, NY (Sept. 10) - Six different players scored goals as the Hofstra Women's Soccer team remained unbeaten with a 6-0 win over Stony Brook on Tuesday afternoon at University Field in Stony Brook, NY.
The Pride improved its record on the season to 4-0-1, the first time since the 1994 team began the year 8-0 that Hofstra has been undefeated through the first five games. Stony Brook, meanwhile, saw its record fall to 0-4.
Hofstra overcame a sluggish start which saw Stony Brook earn the better of the play for the first 20 minutes. However, the Pride struck quickly when junior midfielder Elaine O'Connor (Dublin, Ireland) took the ball in the midfield area and sent a perfect chip pass over the defense to junior forward Brigit Canle (Lynbrook, NY). Canle gathered the ball in and slipped a shot past Seawolves' goalkeeper Cindy Bennett at the 22:58 mark to put the Pride ahead 1-0.
From then on, Hofstra dominated play, putting continuous pressure on the Stony Brook defense. O'Connor set up another goal at the 31:43 mark when she sent a diagonal pass across the front of the penalty area where junior midfielder Charity Schmitt (Pawcatuck, CT - pictured) gathered it in along the right side of the box and blasted a shot off the fingertips of Bennett from 15 yards out to extend the lead to 2-0.
Just 19 seconds later, Hofstra struck again off a Stony Brook turnover. Sophomore back Kristina Covelli (Carlisle, Ontario) one-timed a pass through the Seawolf defense to senior forward Audra Sherman (Quebec, Canada). Sherman then deposited a shot past Bennett's dive and inside the left post to quickly put the Pride up 3-0.
Hofstra then capitalized on a pair of corner kicks over both halves to extend its lead to 5-0. Junior midfielder Marisa Pistone (Hicksville, NY) sent a cross to the six-yard box that was headed in by junior back Dolores Deasley (Drumkeen, Ireland) with 4:28 left in the half to give the Pride a 4-0 lead at intermission. Just 4:31 into the second half, Pistone struck another perfectly-placed corner kick that was headed in by senior back Erin Magee (Burlington, Ontario) for another insurance goal.
Junior forward Erica Monz (Rocky Point, NY) closed out the scoring with 29:53 left in regulation when reserve Stony brook goalie Ashley Blake came out of the penalty area to try to clear a Hofstra through pass. Blake got to the ball an instant before Monz, but her clear attempt deflected off Monz' leg and rolled into the vacated net.
Hofstra continued to put pressure on down the stretch, but Blake had six second half saves to prevent the score from increasing even further. The Pride held a 27-7 edge in shot attempts on the afternoon, including 16-4 in the second half. For the season, Hofstra increased its second half shot advantage over its opponents to 56-17 through five games, while outscoring its opponents 10-0 after halftime.
Rebecca Wachsberger (East Meadow, NY) had two saves for Hofstra before giving way to back-up Kerry Schaefer (Floral Park, NY) at the 72:46 mark. Schaefer added a save in the closing minutes to preserve the shutout.
Hofstra will next be in action when entertains Fordham on Sunday, Sept. 15 for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
