BIZZOZZARO JUMP STARTS HOFSTRA TO 6-1 WIN OVER QUINNIPIAC Hempstead, NY (Sept. 16) - Senior forward Elyse Bizzozzaro (Manalapan, NJ - pictured) came off the bench to score two goals a little over three minutes apart in the first half to send the Hofstra Women's Soccer team on its way to a 6-1 win over Quinnipiac on Tuesday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. With the win, Hofstra improves its record to 5-1 on the season while picking up its first victory at its brand-new stadium. The Pride dropped its first game at the new facility on Saturday when it fell 1-0 to Central Connecticut. Quinnipiac, meanwhile, sees its record slip to 0-6. Hofstra and Quinnipiac were playing to a 0-0 stalemate when Bizzozzaro, who missed the Central Connecticut game after picking up two yellow cards in the previous contest, checked in during the 22nd minute. A little over 10 minutes later, she took advantage of a Quinnipiac giveaway in its defensive third and buried a shot under the crossbar from a tough angle along the left edge of the penalty box to put Hofstra ahead 1-0. Just 3:25 later, she scored again on a similar play, as Bobcat goalkeeper Heather Zaccone miscommunicated with one of her defenders and left the ball loose just outside the 18-yard box. Bizzozzaro stepped in, took one dribble, and tucked the ball over the head of a defender and into the vacated net from the left side of the penatly box for her second goal of the day and sixth of the season (including three game-winners). She also moved into fifth place on Hofstra's all-time goal list with 18 in her three seasons with the Pride. Bizzozzaro, who is a senior academically but has one more year of eligibility left, has a chance to challenge the school record of 39 goals, held by Christa Eidenweil (1997-2000). Senior midfielder Charity Schmitt (Pawcatuck, CT) extended Hofstra's lead to 3-0 early in the second half. After a Quinnipiac clear rolled out of the penalty box, Schmitt ran around the ball, and one-timed a shot from 25 yards out that sailed into the upper right corner at the 61:15 mark. Hofstra tacked on three more goals in the second half, including the first collegiate goals for senior midfielder Valerie Roesler (Sewell, NJ), freshman back Bree Best (Queensland, Australia), and senior midfielder Kendra Sullivan (Middleboro, MA). Best and Sullivan both scored off corner kicks, taken by junior midfielder Emma Kilduff (Kildare, Ireland) and senior midfielder Marisa Pistone (Hicksville, NY), respectively. The only down side to the game for Hofstra was that junior goalkeeper Rebecca Wachsberger (East Meadow, NY) was denied her fourth shutout of the season in the 88th minute, when Quinnipiac was awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball in the left edge of the box. Bobcat forward Christina Salamone converted the penalty kick on her team's only shot of the game. Hofstra finished the day with a 24-1 edge in shots and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. The Pride will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 21 when it takes on Pittsburgh at Hofstra Soccer Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.
