your current business and develop new skills to help you run your
business, the Business Development Center (BDC) has a program that will fit your needs. In cooperation
with the
Frank G. Zarb School of Business, the BDC provides a comprehensive
package of expertise and services promoting economic development
and job creation for the Hofstra community, Long Island, and the
region. The BDC has the benefit of having all of the resources
of Hofstra University at its disposal. Combining the most respected
members of academia and an impressive student body with our business
community and governmental agencies, the BDC can provide the resources
and services to fit your individual and specific needs. A partial

Community Support and Economic Development Programs are geared
toward small businesses and individual proprietors.
Center
for Entrepreneurship Development:
Provides assistance for starting, maintaining and expanding a
business. Workshops provide "nuts and bolts" skills
required to operate and grow a successful business. Training and
counseling enable participants to complete a business plan. A
Certificate in Entrepreneurship may be earned by completing the
following three components: (1) Workshops - Setting Goals, Self
Discovery, Managing Personnel and Operations, Advertising/Presentations,
Insurance/Legal, Sales/Networking, Internet/Electronic Services,
Record Keeping, Taxes, Developing a Marketing Plan, and Financial
Management/Excel; (2) Mentoring (business participation), one-to-one
counseling with business owners sharing their expertise and experiences
as entrepreneurs; (3) Submission of a business plan. Sessions
are held for 10 weeks on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Since the program started in 1991, we have successfully
trained over 900 entrepreneurs.

Charles
A. Gargano, chairman and chief executive officer of Empire
State Development Corporation, awarded the BDC's Center
for Entrepreneurship Development special recognition at
its annual meeting in Utica, New York.
The
BDC was singled out for its outstanding program performance,
achievement and dedication to entrepreneurs. The BDC has
a 14-year history of providing excellent training to entrepreneurs
in their efforts to start, grow and expand their businesses.
A plaque
was presented to Judith Tyne, assistant dean and program
coordinator.

Operation
Downtown:
The first in a series of three free seminars was held on October
27, 2004, at Hofstra University. Guest speaker and author Stuart
R. Levine presented a very informative and interesting program titled
"The Fundamentals of Success." Business owners from
Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties came in record numbers to hear
the presentation. Funded by a grant of New York State Senator Charles
J. Fuschillo, the seminar was heralded as a tremendous success by
all who attended. Details concerning the next seminar, scheduled
for Thursday, November 17, 2005, from 8 to 10 a.m., and featuring
Keith Mason (Vice President of TEM Associates Inc.) are available

Offers custom market research and public opinion polling geared
to meet the specific needs of the client. Providing expertise in
quantitative and qualitative research methods, the Center offers
public opinion polling, brand awareness and customer satisfaction
research, community development, programmatic assessments and business-to-business research. Skilled staff will assist any organization
in answering its research questions with actionable results. |

Lecture Series:
Moderated by Dr. Irwin Kellner. Six lectures per year are designed
to bring together the elite of Long Island's business community
and offer them the opportunity to interact with some of the country's
most powerful and influential thinkers in fields ranging from science
to politics to investments. Chase, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Ruskin Moscou Faltischek,
P.C., and the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency are
the sponsors. Attendance is by invitation only. |

MacArthur Airport Study and Dedication Ceremony |

| Richard V. Guardino, Jr., spoke at the dedication
ceremony for the Peter J. McGowan Concourse at Long Island MacArthur Airport on November 22, 2004. The Scott Skodnek Business
Development Center at Hofstra University completed a study of
the economic impact of the airport on the region's economy during
2003 and concluded that the airport contributed $202.3 million
to the Long Island economy in 2003. |

Written by Irwin L. Kellner, Ph.D., Augustus B. Weller Chair in Economics.
Dr. Kellner is one of the nation's leading economists and is the chief
economist for North Fork Bank and CBS's "MarketWatch." Dr. Kellner appears
regularly on television and is a frequent speaker for business groups
and government leaders. The Economic Report is published bimonthly
by the BDC. |
