Stephen Pitcairn
Kellett KD-1B flown by John M. “Johnny” Miller in the Eastern Air Lines experimental mail route from the roof of the 30th Street Post Office, Philadelphia to nearby Grand Central Airport, Camden, NJ from July 6, 1939 to July 5, 1940.
Kellet KD-1 prototype with a trial load of mail on May 19, 1939 on a street in front of the Department of commerce in Washington. Its flight to Hoover Airport helped Eastern Airlines win a contract for regular service in Philadelphia which operated between July 6, 1939 – July 5, 1940. The KD-1 was the first direct-control Autogiro to go into production in the United States.
