Through the Seasons with Madeline Novlotzky
April 22 - May 31, 2002
Lowenfeld Exhibition Hall, 10th floor, Axinn Library
Madeline Novlotzky (1908-1992) first began studying art at the Moore Institute and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the 1930s. She then studied and painted in Europe after winning a traveling fellowship. Upon her return, she continued her studies and taught children's art classes at the Brooklyn Museum. Ms. Novlotzky then worked as a drafter and model-maker. She and her husband, Hyman, moved to Albany in the 1950s where she taught children's art classes for 20 years. It was in the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley area that she found much inspiration. Ms. Novlotzky received numerous awards and her works were exhibited in solo and group shows.
Ms. Novlotzky's paintings span a period of more than 60 years. Her love of nature was evident in most every work, as was her love of color. Ms. Novlotzky's artistic statement best sums up her philosophy - 'To express in terms of color, form, space, texture, line, my interaction with my environment.'
