Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - A photographic remembrance of the July 1995 massacre of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys will debut September 27, 2006 at the Hofstra Museum. The Bosnian massacre represents the end of the politics of ethic cleansing and genocide that were a main focus in the war.

"The Betrayal of Srebrenica: A Commemoration" is an artistic exhibit that will reflect on not only the events of the war in Bosnia (1992-1995) but also on the human rights and ethical issues that arose. The exhibit mainly focuses on the 10-year anniversary of the July 1995 massacre, which has been recorded as the single, worst atrocity in Europe since World War II.

The exhibit consists of photographs of Srbrenica survivors and the July 11, 2005 10-year commemoration of Srebrenica that was attended by survivors and their supporters. Text panels, which are also part of the exhibit, feature quotes by survivors, journalists, United Nations officials, International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslaviajudges and Bosnian Serb political and military officials.

"The exhibit is a poignant visual reminder of the devastating impact that genocide has on our global society yet it is also a potent portrayal of the strength of the human spirit and enduring ties that bind a community of survivors," said Beth Levinthal, director of the Hofstra Museum

Lisa DiCaprio and Paula Allen are the guest curators for the exhibit. They received a Puffin Foundation grant to travel to Srebrenica to photograph and research the 10-year commemoration by the mourning survivors of the war. The pictures from their travels create this visual, articulate story of images that comprises the exhibit.

"This exhibit is quite unique as it presents a photographic essay of a community's commemoration of mass loss of lives as it sheds light on the rebirth of that community ten years later," said Beth.
