Broadway on the Record:
Glimpses of a Century
March 24 - May 21, 2003
Lowenfeld Exhibition Hall, 10th floor, Axinn Library
Guest Curator: Professor James Kolb, Department of Drama and Dance
Theatre is the most ephemeral of the arts, irrevocably lost once the show closes, but photos, posters, period recordings, and archival and studio reconstructions may in some measure evoke a lost age and preserve some sense of what the event was like.
In conjunction with the Hofstra Cultural Center Conference, The Broadway Musical, 1920-2020, this exhibition illustrates a century of prominent and lesser-known musicals on the American stage as documented by record jacket covers, reproductions of posters and CD covers, and photos of artists, composers and lyricists all of whose work has been preserved in some measure by photographic means and on various recording media from the Edison cylinders of the 1890's to 78s, LPs, and CDs.
