The Reading/Writing Learning Clinic provides professional evaluations and a variety of reading and writing courses designed to foster and support literacy growth, and build confidence in a learner's reading and writing abilities.

The Reading Clinic's professional evaluation is designed to create/build a "biographic literacy profile" that provides a detailed appraisal of a learner's reading and writing strengths. The profile is useful for parents and teachers who wish to understand how a learner makes use of reading strategies and how a learner uses literacy to solve problems. The profile is also useful when advocating for a learner is necessary in the education decision-making process.

The Reading Clinic's reading and writing courses create opportunities to support a learner's literacy development in a nurturing environment under the guidance of a New York State certified reading specialist. Individual and small-group sessions are available to meet a variety of needs. Our goals are threefold: to support learners as they develop and use effective and efficient reading and writing strategies; to build a learner's confidence; and to help learners appreciate the linguistic strengths they possess by revaluing the reading and writing processes and revaluing themselves as readers and writers.

The Reading Clinic is connected to Hofstra's Literacy Studies Department in the School of Education and Allied Human Services.

All evaluations and courses are conducted by NYS certified reading specialists.
