| Hofstra TV Awards and Recognition, with Meg Kahlbaugh |
 |
THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS - The
opportunity to produce an event of this magnitude,
working with professionals and students to create a
showcase of each individual's work, is really the
ultimate experience for a student of television
production. I have
had the chance to recruit
crew members, meet
and recruit the judges for this year, work with ourfaculty and get their expert advice, and interact
with many students who submitted their
work. I feel that this experience is something that
will be valuable to me in the future and has allowed me to
learn so much from all of the participants!
EVENT - Alumni and industry professionals
choose award winners in 14 categories for video/film
work. The show is fully produced by videostudents in the School of Communications. The event
takes place on Wednesday, May 11th, at 8 p.m.
in Studio
A of Dempster Hall. Invitations go out to all students and
faculty in
the Audio/Video/Film (AVF) department. It is
produced by Meg Kahlbaugh, directed by Jake Gidich,
and managed by Melissa Kobasic and other TV
students.
DIFFICULTY - Convincing students that
their work is
worthy of recognition. Faculty was informed, given
flyers, and helped to get the word out, as well
as encouraged students to participate.
TECHNIQUES - A central e-mail address was
set up to handle all questions and comments
(e-mail here), and appears on all
flyers and announcements. The show will be
broadcast live
over Hofstra Television (HTV). We are fortunate that
the judges, all alumni of the School of
Communications (before 2001, to allow fairness and
evaluation based on the work presented), hold high-level positions in the industry, giving students who
participate a chance to meet them.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - We invite all
Hofstra students to attend the event, and
congratulate all who submitted their work for review!

| Big and Little Brothers and Sisters, with Matt Craig |
 |
THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS - Hofstra
students 'bigs' get a fresh perspective on their ability
to help others, and to be involved in the community
outside of Hofstra. The children 'littles' experience
the mentorship of young adults who understand and
choose to spend time talking, helping and becoming the kind of people the children can rely on.
EVENT - About 15 students, each one
assigned to
mentor a child from a local elementary school, are
united one day a week for after-school activity and
events. Students who are currently volunteering
spoke with 90 Hofstra students in the Student Center
Atrium, who plan to attend an information session for
fall 2005 placement. DIFFICULTY - The occasional problem with
class
schedules prevent Hofstra students from working
on the day they are scheduled to be at
Hofstra. Students also develop relationships
with 'littles' and then separation is difficult, although
many children come back every year!
TECHNIQUES - Bringing children to activities
that will
allow them to interact with role models, such as
Hofstra sports teams (while the team practices or in
competition events). A recent trip included a game
with the coach and players of the Hofstra women's
softball team. The annual event allowed them to
meet players and the coach, and to learn about the
game as well as share some homework time. STUDENT PARTICIPATION - Students are
welcome to
log on to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Web site. Volunteers must have
an interest in helping a child and be available for two
hours per week.
EVENTS COMING UP - Contact Misty-Ann
Kirk for
more information about becoming a Big Brother or
Big Sister at Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Long Island, or for more information about the
organization visit the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of
America site.

| It's All About the Spirit, with Neima Mansouri |
 |
THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS - We know
we were
on the way to achieving a new spirit on campus
when the Student Government Association (SGA)sponsored a barbeque at a baseball game with Delta
Phi Epsilon. This is where we want to go by bringingthe clubs, sororities and fraternities, and all studentstogether at events.
EVENT - The new committee produced a
student
section for Hofstra men's basketball (the largest and
loudest turnout ever!) and a trip to Delaware with 40
students for a conference game. Next year the
committee will sponsor, along with other Hofstra
departments, trips to support the Hofstra teams at
their away games and championships.
TECHNIQUES - We created a points system
for clubs
to encourage them to come out to sports events,
following up on our success of last year. We want to
increase the energy and the synergy of the groups
and all of the participants, and we know that
students will have a great time! Also, we work closely
with Jesse Bonfiglio, the director of marketing
and promotions for intercollegiate athletics, who
helps us get the word out about the games and our
events.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - We are looking
for some
new key people to get a lot of new events off the
ground. Contact Neima via
e-mail or by calling the SGA Office at
x-36960.
EVENTS COMING UP - Stay tuned in the
2005/2006
academic year for road trips, Spirit Week and new
activities for Homecoming Week, beginning October
10th. (Game vs. University of Maine is Saturday,
October 15.)

| Celebrating Hofstra Diversity, with Eisa Shukran |
 |
THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS - The
planning of
this event was largely dependent on many student
organizations working together, and a group of
sponsors including the Student Government
Association, Lackmann Dining Services, and the
Offices of Campus Life, Student Activities and
International Students. The awareness of cultural
diversity on campus was felt and better understood
by the group from being a part of this effort.
EVENT - Hofstra United, the celebration of
Hofstra's
diverse campus, included the showcasing of 10 clubs,
entertainment, DJing and foods from around
the
world, and took place under the tent in the Playhouse
Quad on April 20 during Common Hour. DIFFICULTY - An outdoor event held at
Common
Hour is limiting, due to concerns about noise
disturbance. The party had to end because of
the continuation of classes in adjacent buildings at
1 p.m.
TECHNIQUES - Students arranged for
groups to
perform and make announcements about other
events. Lackmann Dining Services initiated the
conversation with the students, and by doing so
allowed the students to create the best possible
event. Students also promoted the event, including
advertising it throughout the week on multiple signs
in the Student Center Atrium.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - Students can
participate
by suggesting new ideas for the event by contacting
Eisa Shukran, director of Lackmann Dining Services,
at x-34066.
EVENTS COMING UP - Visit the Web site or
contact
the office at x-36662.
