Rene Serge Pierre Charles, Hofstra Administrator and Advisor to the Hofstra Haitian Organization and the Bicentennial Celebration of Haiti's Independence March 8-12 at Hofstra University

Serge Pierre-Charles "The H2O, or Hofstra Haitian Club, exists to educate ourselves and others about our heritage and the cultural beauty of our country, along with community service activity where we live here on Long Island. As one of the original student members, it was my heart and soul."Serge Pierre-Charles, Club Advisor and founding member, acknowledges the support of in the founding of the club at Hofstra in 1998. Students attended the one meeting weekly while the group decided what they could do to achieve their goals. Visiting homeless shelters, raising funds for scholarship in memory of a deceased member, food sales are some of the events with which they are currently involved. As the advisor to the group, Serge talks with all of the group members about what would interest them and helps them to put together a plan. He attends all of the weekly meetings to get to know all of the members and many of them come to him for advice about whatever they are concerned with. He explains his approach to the advisor role: "You have to show them first that you are dedicated. My job is to show them how important this is." He encourages students to do for themselves as much as possible and reminds them (frequently!) that he is only the advisor. He will contact speakers and serve as a representative of the University in behalf of the group. He has also been instrumental in finding some of the funding needed for speakers and publicity. He reminds the students of their responsibilities as club members and when planning events. He sees the open door to his office as a training opportunity for students. "To help students plan their events I will meet as a group, in my role as administrator in the Office of Event Management and as Advisor," he said. Serge will also be a participant in the new Office of Event Management Open House for Students, where the open discussion of event planning at Hofstra for Student Organizations will continue. (For more information about the Open House Series, contact the Office of Event Management at x34067.)The Club has planned a major cultural festival that is free and open to the public from March 8th through March 12th at Hofstra. Dr. Henry Franck, Etienne Telemaque and Alix Remponeau (son of Geo Remponeau), The Ibo Dancers of Paulette St. Lot and others will speak at "The Week-long Celebration of the Bicentennial of Haiti's Proclamation of Independence: 1804-2004". He visited events all over the metro area to listen to speakers and participate in events that took place at other Universities and museums. The event will be in cooperation with the Hofstra Cultural Center Caribbean Lecture Series. The event, which is free to the public, . "We are offering our students to participate throughout the week. History, music and art, including the founder of the largest and most well known Art Institute in Haiti (Thursday March 11th) will be highlighted. We are contracting with speakers and sending invitations to Hofstra faculty, speakers and students to invite them to attend. The club's Executive Board have each been assigned with responsibility working with speakers and supervising events that are taking place. Arianne Berritto and Denise Harris, Assistant Directors of the Office of Student Activities and the First Annual Club Presidents Retreat

Denise and Jo Ann at Presidents Retreat "We knew it was a success when they stayed for dinner!"Denise Harris and Arianne Berritto, both Assistant Directors in the Office of Student Activities, described the positive evaluations and feedback received from about 80 student club leaders who attended the First Annual Club Presidents Retreat. The event took place at the University Club on Friday February 6 from 2pm until 7pm. The Student Activities team planned the event after listening carefully to student's requests for information about leadership and the need to learn from each other about experiences with Club leadership at Hofstra. Denise explained: " We discussed in small groups why leadership is important, the value of working together in the groups and with other groups, the resources tools and tips needed to succeed and the importance of passing on the information. As the underlying foundation for the event, members were given a structured approach to learning. The agenda seemed to satisfy the need for students to identify where help and support can be found. Arianne described the importance of the Evaluation that they developed and the Survey given to all student club members that she initiated this semester. "Students loved the University Club and the opportunity to interact with each other. We made sure that there was a lot of sharing and a minimum amount of telling students how to benefit from the leadership experience. The students had some great ideas, such as meetings, keeping notebooks, having retreats, shadowing with future and outgoing leadership and holding elections for the following year mid semester to allow overlap.Denise and Arianne were emphatic about the support of fellow administrators in departments such as Hofstra Dining Services and Office of Event Management who were participants in the program. They believe that this kind of interdepartmental support was also a learning experience for the Administrators, and was a helpful tool in teaching some valuable skills. Said Denise, "We learned from each other and they were there for us. We appreciate their support and involvement in these efforts to reach our students. Thank you for your support!"

Kalyea Moss of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at Hofstra University
spacer
Dawnyse, Kalyea, and Ekiuwa- Members of Delta Sigma Theta Kalyea Moss is a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at Hofstra University. "My mom always told me when you go to college you have to pledge Delta!! My cousin, who I really looked up to when I was growing up, was a Delta and I didn't even know it." Kalyea is a student leader with a strong commitment to her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. As a junior at Holy Trinity High School she was invited to visit colleges in the south where the Nassau Alumini chapter of Delta Sigma Theta to host a group of students on a Black College Tour. "It was then that I was exposed to Greek life and the community service that they do. Delta Sigma Theta is about academic excellence, community service and has a five point thrust of economic development, education development, international awareness and involvement , political awareness and involvement and physical and mental health. When I came to Hofstra, there was no chapter here. I knew in my heart that we had to have a chapter at Hofstra." She became a member of her sorority Delta Sigma Theta, a international organization, after the Xi Gamma chapter was reactivated.Event planning is central to their mission and to provide a framework , the organization chooses a focus issue for each school year. This year they chose to work on educating themselves and other students about the importance of financial knowledge and stability. The events that are planned serve to reach out beyond the group to the community of students and into the local community as well. Said Kalyea: "The focus that we choose is about becoming strong and able and we then look for opportunities to share what we can with others. The annual Social Action Dinner brings invited guests together to socialize and hear speakers who educate us about the subject." The members then plan other outreach efforts, including the annual Delta Week. The event took place February 9th through the 13th with an event each day, planned to help Hofstra students better understand issues and to reach out to others. In January, the group's members participated in the building of a home with Habitat for Humanity. Kalyea said that one of the people thanked them for their help and she was truly touched by the gratitude that the family expressed to all of the volunteers who spent the day at work. "I cried a little bit. It meant so much to help her", she said.Interaction with other Hofstra groups, including the members of the ALFSA (African and Latino Fraternal Sororal Alliance) is another important aspect of life at Hofstra for the young women of Delta Sigma Theta. With other organizations in the ALFSA, they planned the ALFSA Expo in an effort to reach out to those who do not currently have an affiliation. New members are welcomed by the group. "You don't have to be African American to attend our meetings or to become a member, and we welcome those who have the drive to make a difference with us."

Martin Melkonian, Professor of Economics, and the International Scene Lecture Series

Martin Melkonian, Co-Director Martin Melkonian is an active event organizer and participant on the Hofstra campus. He is the Co-Director, along with Professor Carolyn Eisenberg and Professor Linda Longmire, of the International Lecture Series Spring 2004 series "Foreign Policy Issues in the Fall 2004 Elections" which begins Wednesday, February 18th. The series will begin with the showing of the film "Uncovered", which examines the decisions to go to war in Iraq. Subsequent talks will include: "The War and the Economy," March 3rd, "A Response to Terrorism," March 10th, and "The Media and the Fall 2004 Election," March 17th. The series is co-sponsored by the Hofstra Cultural Center ad the L.I. Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives. The International Scene has a long history of success with audiences that participate year after year. Student participation that is seen of these events is often enthusiastic, due to involvement of Hofstra faculty and the use of forum lectures in the curriculum. He emphasized the collaboration with other Hofstra departments, including the Hofstra Cultural Center, which provides some funding and assistance with mail and publications. Departments contribute some funds as well as committee participation and speakers. University Relations also provides public information and plays a part in drawing the audience.Professor Melkonian describes the philosophy of the events that have been developed over a number of years in this way: "Our presentation of controversial issues and access to experts in many disciplines creates a unique opportunity for dialogue and discussion. We have gotten excellent feedback from our students through writing assignments and comments. We have strong support for this kind of activity at Hofstra. It provides our faculty the opportunity to reach out and interact with each other. This provides them with a sense of community." The series has given Hofstra an opportunity to reach out to the broader Long Island community including alumni, the PEIR (Professional Executives in Retirement) group and other interested residents. Melkonian concludes by saying "We are presenting an invitation for learning and exchange of ideas within our community. We all benefit from this kind of outreach."With the cooperation of Long Island Teachers for Human Rights for the March 10th lecture, speakers and issues are brought to the table and are often incorporated into the choice of subject or participation of other . Professor Melkonian emphasizes that collaboration with other departments, including the Hofstra Cultural Center providing funds and other assistance with mail and publications, has made many other events possible. Departments also have contributed funds, committee support and access to speakers. University Relations has also contributed by providing public information about events for potential audiences. Professor Melkonian says that he is pleased that relationships have been built for these reasons, but he emphasized the faculty's opportunity to reach out to each other and present ideas has been important in developing a community among the faculty. "We have strong support for this kind of activity and the interaction that it creates. When the faculty becomes involved, they discuss events with their students and they bring together ideas, experience and query. When we present an invitation to network within our community Hofstra becomes known for that."
