HOFSTRA HOLIDAY EVENT NEWS! |
 |
Photo: Celebrating the last Shabbat
Sabbath of
the semester, students of
Hofstra Hillel turn Student Center 142 into a Winter
Wonderland.
Happy Holidays! Time to rest and
rejuvenate! To all our newsletter readers and the
wonderful and talented (that's you!) event planners
at Hofstra ... we wish you a very happy holiday
season and great things to come in the new year!
Hofstra students organize and celebrate to help
others! Groups took the time to reach out to
people in need, while they regrouped and refreshed for the
coming year! The Hofstra Organization of Latin Americans
(HOLA) collected canned food and clothing to
benefit local shelters in the Student Center Game
Room, with a free Latin food buffet! Beta Alpha Psi had
a gift-wrapping event in the Student Center
Multipurpose Room, where donated gifts were wrapped
with the group's corporate sponsors. The Hofstra
American Marketing Association (HAMA) planned an
Executive Board night out in New York City. All
students were invited to a Spa Day sponsored by
Hillel Women on December 7, and skating in Central
Park with Entertainment Unlimited on December 10
at 11 a.m.! Thanks to everyone
who participated and for all that you do!
Wow! The latest technology hits the Hofstra
Web site! The Clinton Conference, "William
Jefferson Clinton: The 'New Democrat' from Hope,"
at Hofstra on November 10-12, attained a new level
of accessibility with conference registration, webcasting of all conference sessions (up to five
simultaneous sessions) including the Presidential
Address, television access on the Hofstra
campus, a press room with live audio/video links to
the conference over the three days, and coverage by the
Hofstra School of Communications public relations
students in conjunction with the Office of University
Relations. Visit the Press Room at the University Relations Web site to learn more.
Explore conferencing online! Explore the
possibility of E-conferencing, the latest technology
and trends in the marketplace. ConferZone is an
objective E-conferencing resource that tracks the
latest technology and trends in the marketplace. Visit

MAKING OF A NEW CLUB, WITH LAURA AND LISA GIUNTA |
 |
The Event- Twins Lisa and Laura Giunta are
the co-founders of SCAFFU, which stands for Science Fiction, Comic,
Anime, Fantasy Fans United, one of the newest Hofstra Student Organizations. Their
goal is to bring fantasy fans
together for events and regular meetings, where they can share their
unique knowledge and interests in the different genres. Students who are
in other clubs, including the Hofstra Gamers, have
joined SCAFFU after meeting members who visited
their own club meetings. This semester, the group
has held
a three-day costume-making workshop, a trip to see the newest
Harry Potter film, and a Star Wars Marathon Night. In the spring, the
organization hopes to have a Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit
tournament, hold a cosplay party at Hofstra USA, and may present a
science
fiction actor to speak about a "mini-convention" at Hofstra. Great Ideas- Visiting other club meetings and
hosting table exhibits in the Student Center Atrium,
the group has quickly grown to 62
members. To find fans
of science-fiction, comics,
anime, and fantasy, the members designed 30
unique flyers
with different visual images and a group e-mail so that
students could contact each other.
They have a group
on the Facebook Web site, Hofstra.thefacebook.com, the
popular software where groups and individuals get together. On the
site there is an open message board with announcements, portraits
of members and an ongoing dialogue.
Learn More- Hofstra students may attend
the
group's weekly meeting, which will begin again in February (the time and place
are TBD), or e-mail the group at
SCAFFU@yahoo.com for more
information.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH, WITH TERRY HALLER |
 |
The Event- Operation Downtown is a
seminar series that is free of charge (advance
registration is required) with three events per year. The events are cross-marketed to members of the
entrepreneurial, small business and local Chambers of
Commerce of Long Island. The Business Development
Center (BDC) at Hofstra coordinates all programs including the
recruitment of speakers, promotions and public
information, and on-site support and program format. Question and answer periods follow the speaker,
which create dialogue on issues of
interest to business owners.
Great Ideas- Flyers are posted in public
libraries throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties,
and the BDC works with the Office of University
Relations to publicize the seminars. Members of civic,
business and community groups who have attended
previous events also receive flyers via mail. Reminder
e-mails are made to registered participants. The
events serve as a networking opportunity that
crosses over business and community affiliations,
while the BDC gains exposure. Participants are
informed about the variety of programs available
at the BDC.
Learn More- For information on upcoming
events and the many conference and research
services available at the BDC, visit the Web site or contact Theresa
Haller in the office of the Vice President for
Business Development.

STUDENTS MAKING THEATER, WITH SARA MORRIS |
 |
The Event- This weekend the Masquerade
Theater Company presents Wild
Party, by Andrew Lippa, on December 9 and
10
at 8 p.m., and December
11 at 2 p.m. in the Monroe Lecture Hall. Tickets are
available at the
door.
Great Ideas- The group decided that two
chairpersons do a better job
than just one. This team approach allows them to
share tasks,
which makes it possible to provide more support to
the others, who work
on the ongoing fall and spring productions. As
long-time club
members, they understand how the decision-making process works.
Their presence and willingness to do everything that
needs to be done,
including production, fundraising, publicity and stage
management/direction, creates future leaders and enables the club to appoint
members to different positions every year.
Learn More- Masquerade is for all Hofstra
students interested in the
theater. Become a member of the cast, production
staff, fundraiser or
an officer. Contact Sara
Morris for more
information.

OPEN RESEARCH SEMINARS, WITH PROFESSOR JIN SHIN |
 |
The Event- The Hofstra Psychology
Research Seminar provides a forum for the discussion
of research on minds, brains, and behavior. Speakers
from the Hofstra faculty and other universities
present the latest research from the variety of areas
that span the broad field of psychology.
Great Ideas- Seminar presentations are
often co-sponsored by other academic departments,
including biology, computer science and philosophy. By doing so, the Department brings faculty and
students together to participate in a cross-disciplinary presentation of research and discussion. All members of the Hofstra community are invited to
attend the Psychology Research Seminar, and
announcements are posted in all e-mail accounts
during the week prior to the event. The forum also
allows students to consider a different field of study
and to interact with faculty because of the open
access to these events and the high level of faculty
attendance. Presenters are introduced on the
Psychology Web page prior to the events, with links to
the presentation and faculty Web page. Previous
event presentations are also available on the Web site.
Learn More- Visit the Psychology Research
Seminar Web site or e-mail Professor Jin
Shin for more information about future events.
