| Hofstra Concerts Presents at Hofstra USA, with Kristen Ruccatano of Hofstra Concerts |
 |
EVENT - The Battle of the Bands is a
competition
for 'best band' by a panel of judges (the winner was
Getaway Drive!).
DIFFICULTY - To give students with different musical tastes
the entertainment they are looking for. We try to mix it
up with music, comedy, coffeehouse or open mikes. To get students to come out, we usually do our
events on Thursday nights because most students
don't have Friday classes.
TECHNIQUES - Meeting with the performers as
we
planned on a constant basis, interacting with them
and letting them interact with each other, is the
surest way to guarantee a great show. We learn a lot
from them and we can also be sure that our
regulations at Hofstra are understood. Advertising in
residential and academic buildings helps us get the
word out about our event.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - We currently
have 80
energetic members and we are committed to encouraging new
people to participate! As always, we seek students
of any standing who have a passion for music and an
interest in helping change sets during live shows,
finding entertainment, advertising and ticket sales,
working on contracts, and giving us new ideas! Our
meetings are on Mondays at 8 PM at 141 Student
Center.
UPCOMING EVENTS - We're hosting "Live in
the Rat"
and an Arena Show at the beginning of next
semester. Join us for "As Tall as Lions" on December
5, 2004, Coffeehouse in the Rathskeller at 7 PM
and "Getaway Drive" on February 6, 2005, at Hofstra
USA. We are also looking to bring to campus artists such as Alicia
Keyes, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, Terror Squad,
and Dashboard Confessional in the future.
YOUR SUCCESS - When you put a lot of
effort and
time into making an event happen, you have to be
realistic about your expected turnout. We do not
base our success on how many people show up. If
you constantly notice weak turnout toward a
particular kind of event, you can readjust your
formula. Mutual cooperation, respect of
administrators and university staff, and routine safety
checks have always been the standard trademarks of
success for Hofstra Concerts.

| Wellness for Collegiate Women with Sekiya Dorsett, Collegiate Women of Color |
 |
EVENT - The Wellness Fair was sponsored by
two organizations, Black Women Enterprises and
Winthrop Hospital, and the Hofstra University
Scott Skodnek Business Development Center. We were asked to
promote the event to students, which we wanted to
do for the seminars, speakers and discussion about
wellness, as well as the networking opportunities.
DIFFICULTY - In choosing which
events to get involved in, we have to find out from
our members if they have interest and will participate
as well. We have to decide what we can devote our time to and how it will benefit our members. Sometimes that is a difficult task.
TECHNIQUES - We invite members from other
Hofstra groups to our events, and we attend as many of their events as
we can. We like to announce our events at their events.
We can learn about the other groups and their
members, and see what their presentations are about
and how popular they are. It has allowed us all to
have more and better events that don't overlap as
much as they did.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - Our meetings are
open to everyone, men and women, who want to
learn and meet new people. Our meetings are at 6:30 PM
on Mondays in room 145 Student Center. Promoting and developing
events are done as a group.
UPCOMING EVENTS - In February, we invite
our founders, members, family members, and potential
members to learn about the organization and to
recognize the good work that has been done by many
individuals. In the spring, we also have three
discussions, some with professors, on different
topics. We advertise our events in the Atrium several
days in advance.
YOUR SUCCESS - Success for us is giving
our members an opportunity to be part of a
community of businesspeople and health care
providers and developing ourselves
professionally. It is about making connections! For
more information, or to contact Sakiya Dorsett,
public relations coordinator, send an e-mail
to hucwc@yahoo.com.

| Psychology Students Explore Work with Gayle Kaminsky, Hofstra Psychology Club |
 |
EVENT - The Psychology Club hosted a panel discussion, as part of
Career Week, with The Career Center on Thursday, November 18 at the Alumni
House Great Room. Together with The Career Center staff and Professor Brown, we
invited recent grads and faculty members to discuss their current
careers. We want students to learn about careers and opportunities in addition to the traditional clinical and counseling roles.
DIFFICULTY - Getting the speakers that we wanted was difficult in some cases. The best time for our event was during Career Week (and during the day for our students), but some of the speakers that we wanted were not available to leave work and come to Hofstra.
TECHNIQUES - We give all of our professors fliers to distribute in
their classes. I also send e-mail messages to them to ask them to
participate and encourage their students. To further help our students start
thinking about careers, we have had Marvin Reed, Director of The Career
Center, come and talk us about the services The Career Center offers to students.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - Students were told to pre-register with The
Career Center for this event so that we could make sure that there was enough
room. However, we did allow students to walk in because we didn't want to turn them away. We promote active involvement in their career development by organizing many events about
many different things. Students can check our Web site, which keeps
them informed about events, news and awards/fellowships that are
available through our club.
UPCOMING EVENTS - On Wednesday, December 1, Dr. Lola Nouryan, an
adjunct professor in Hofstra's Psychology Doctoral Program in
School-Community Psychology, will discuss the field of forensic
psychology. For updates and other upcoming events check out the
Psychology Club Web site or e-mail Gayle at shortrocks@msn.com.

| Election Day Coverage with Siobhan Federici, Center for New Student Support Services |
 |
EVENT - The Dean of Students division
hosted Election Day events on November 2. The
daytime event was Election Day Coverage, featuring
television reports and group activities, along with a
delicious luncheon and patriotic giveaways!
DIFFICULTY - It is always a challenge to
sponsor events that students are interested in
attending, and we work to provide features that
appeal to the students. Dean of Students, New
Student Support Services, Residential Life, and
Student Activities staff knew from prior events during
the election campaign that students were interested
in activities sponsored around the election so we
planned accordingly.
TECHNIQUES - We publicized the event the
day prior at Bits 'n' Bytes. The day of the event, we
placed signs and balloons throughout the Student
Center pointing people in the direction of the event in
Room 141. The "All-American" theme with free flags,
buttons, rings, candy, pencils and T-shirt giveaways
helped us set the celebratory tone. Students were
asked to complete surveys asking about their political
views. The surveys were used at the evening event
at Hofstra USA, which featured a debate, election
coverage and dinner.
UPCOMING EVENTS - Find out about events
sponsored by the Dean of Students Office by fliers
posted in the residence halls and Atrium,
advertisements in The Chronicle, and publicized on
the Student Center Marquis. Students can sign up for
a weekly campus event list by sending an e-mail
to New Student Support Services at Freshman@hofstra.edu

| Power Plays and Poo-Wa-Bah! With Jim Kolb, Department of Drama and Dance |
 |
EVENT - Hofstra Drama/Dance students
present a semester filled with saints, singing and
political satire, as the current "Power Season"
showcases students eager to show their skills on
stage and behind the scenes. (For those of you who
wonder what Poo-Wa-Bah is, it dates back to the
1950s and Hofstra alumnus Francis Ford Coppola, who
still uses it when he starts a new film project. His
daughter, Sofia, describes it as a magic word from
her Dad's theater days.)
DIFFICULTY - Appreciation for drama is
something that we are trying to promote. We would
like to see everyone on campus -- students, faculty, administrators and staff -- experience and enjoy this type of
entertainment and our talented
student actors.
TECHNIQUES - Our promotional materials and
our theme for each season are designed to interest
and intrigue an audience. We advertise our events extensively.Bookmarks (listing all events/dates/locations) that
we place in bookstores at registers and on the 10th
Floor Museum area of the Axinn Library, fliers on
campus, and distributed to the county libraries,
special subscriber rates, subscriber newsletters for
every production, a student newsletter prepared by
students and for students, and free admission for the
Hofstra community all help us create an audience for
our student actors. We have also
promoted our work via WRHU and HTV.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION - Over the course
of the summer, I contact and meet with all new
students in the program, and write to all
returning students. Our students rehearse, on
average, one hour for every minute of performance,
so their time commitment is significant. Between
semesters they work on preparing for auditions, or on
doing preliminary work on roles for which they have
been cast. All students work on productions, building
sets, hanging lights, sewing costumes, making props,
and stage managing in addition to acting.
UPCOMING EVENTS - Current offerings
include The Memorandum, followed by the Julius
Caesar for the 56th Annual Shakespeare Festival
March 3-13, The Dentist and the Collegium Musicum
on March 5 and 12, The Dance Program's Spring
Concert April 21-24 and No Mercy April 22-May 1.Contact the Department of Drama and Dance at
(516) 463-5444 for more information or visit the Web site
YOUR SUCCESS - We never cut our ties with
the past! Our wonderful alumni newsletter, The Poo-
Wa-Bah, keeps our students and alumni connected. Some of our former students help us updat mailing lists, which we use to get to as many of our
alumni as possible. Many of our graduates stay in the
field and work with each other many times on
different projects through the years. Our alumni
come back, participate, teach and interact with our
students year after year. In this profession, we
prefer generosity to competition.
