Hofstra NORML, with Jake Smith |
 |
The event - The third meeting of the newly
formed group presented an "entertaining and
informative look into Fourth Amendment rights and
how to use them" in the Student Center Plaza Room
on October 2 at 9 p.m. HofstraNORML is one of
many local NORML (National Organization for the
Reform of Marijuana Laws) chapters on University
campuses around the country. The national
organization relies on Web tools, local events and
membership building to maintain an international
action network that has existed for over 30 years.Jake Smith is a junior at Hofstra who believes in
getting involved. He supports NORML's goal to
educate people about their rights, and to decriminalize
the use of marijuana. Jake has been an active supporter of the organization, along with others around the world.
Great ideas - The national organization
provides useful tools for the formation of local
chapters. The NORML
Web site includes instructions and guidelines on how toform local groups, clearly outlining suggested
activities and ways to
obtain speakers for meetings (called
the "Campus Tour.") Another tool
used on the group's Web site is thefacebook.com, an online directory
that connects people through social networks at
schools.
Learn more - The national organization
provides a structure for activities and education, and
allows students to take part at a national level. Contact Jake Smith at
at the HofstraNORML
Web site. For more information about the
national
organization or the local Hofstra chapter, click here.

Wrestling with Words, with Professor Margaret Stein |
 |
The event - Wrestling with
Words is named for A Screening and
Discussion Series: Writers and the Writing Process as
Depicted in Film. Sponsored by the Writing
Program
of the Hofstra University English Department, five
films
are shown and briefly discussed on Monday evenings
at 7 p.m.
Great ideas - Faculty members
Margaret Stein, Ethna Lay and David Pecan guide students and interested individuals to think analytically and to consider elements
common to composition as well as film. They also
encourage students to attend as many academic
events at Hofstra as possible and to do a written
response about their experience. Students respond
to the
images of struggling artists as theydefine
their writing identity.
Learn more- The event is open to the public
and refreshments are served. On Monday, November
14th, Shakespeare in Love will be
shown at 7 p.m. in
the Student Center Theater. For more information
about the English Composition courses, click here or

School of Comm Radio Executives Panel, with John Mullen |
 |
The event - Radio Realities, presented on
October 20th at 7 p.m. in Studio A of Dempster Hall,
was sponsored by Radio Hofstra University WRHU and
the Hofstra School of Communication as part of their
10th year anniversary celebration. The event was
billed as a meet-and-greet (network event) with executives
and hosts of the top local radio stations, including
MTV Radio, Walk 97.5 FM, 98.7 KISS FM, Mix 102.7
WNEW,
WBAB 102.3 FM and the Long Island Radio Group.
Great ideas - John Mullen, Operations
Manager for WRHU, recruited the panel of guests and
gave them
the opportunity to meet and interact
with radio students from the Hofstra School of
Communication. Based on their experience in the
industry, he found the best storytellers with a
stake in talent development who were willing to speak to students one-on-one after
the event. There was nightclub-like
lighting, cool sounds (hip-hop), and a hip backdrop (PowerPoint logo projected on the wall behind the
speakers see the photo) to
create excitement. The event was scheduled at 7 p.m.,
immediately preceding the popular Fox network program, The OC. An e-mail account,
SCOSCOOP@hofstra.edu,
was set up for registration and became a starting point for
communication with students and planners.
Learn more - Radio Hofstra University (link)
can be heard via the Web. Visit the WRHU and Hofstra School of Communication's
Web sites for more information about future events, or
contact John Mullen at x3-5106.

Visiting Phi Beta Kappa Scholar and the Department of Religion, with Professor Warren Frisina |
 |
The event - Two public lectures were given
on October 26 by the world-renowned expert on
mysticism, monasticism and apocalyptic thinking,
Bernard McGinn, University of Chicago. Dr. McGinn
visited Hofstra under the auspices of the Phi Beta
Kappa Visiting Scholar program. He spent two days
on campus, visiting classrooms, hosting a faculty
seminar, meeting with students informally, and giving
public lectures. The afternoon lecture, "Why
Monasticism Matters," drew over 130 students,
faculty and friends of Hofstra. The evening lecture
was titled "Apocalyptic Visions: Joachim of Fiore in
the History of Western Thought," and also
attracted over 80 attendees. McGinn's visit was well
timed to help celebrate the inauguration of Hofstra's
new Department of Religion and the founding of the
Msgr. Thomas J. Hartman Endowed Chair in Catholic
Studies.
Great ideas - Each year the national Phi
Beta Kappa organization provides visiting scholar
members to speak at colleges and universities around
the world. Dr. McGinn is the third Phi Beta Kappa visiting
scholar in as many years. Two years ago we hosted
Richard Bernstein, New School University, and last
year we enjoyed the visit of Wendy Doniger,
University of Chicago. Phi Beta Kappa lists about
20,000 members in the New York metropolitan area,
with many holding positions of leadership in a variety
of fields. The organization provided Hofstra with a
local area member roster with addresses. Invitations
(tri-fold program brochures) were mailed to all within
travel distance to the events. This enabled us to
spread the word to a select group of people who may
not have known that Hofstra has one of only two Phi
Beta Kappa chapters on Long Island.
Learn more - For information about religious
studies and philosophy at Hofstra, click here. Visit the
Phi Beta Kappa Web site, or contact
Dr. Warren Frisina
at x3-6023.
