EVENT CONCEPT- Hispanic Heritage Weekbegins on October 12 and will highlight the wonderful
foods of various Hispanic cultures. Partnering with
the International Students office, we are promoting
the event with flyers, banners, posters, voicemail to
bring everyone to our location. Decorations, music of
a Mariachi band and signs in the Student Center
Atrium will also be used. With events such as this, we
can test the waters to continue to expand our
concepts and variety.
SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS - I want to be on
hand for all of our events because it allows me to
observe and talk to people about whether they like
the concept that we are presenting. Our events help
us to bring customers, and potential new ones, into
an environment where we can see what they like and
what they don't. Fresh foods and good service are
what we want the public to see.
DIFFICULTY YOU FACE- Bringing students and staff
of the University who are not our regular customers
and finding ways to get them to try something that
they may not be familiar with.
TECHNIQUES THAT WORK- Events like this one will
show the public what we can do, that we are not
simply cafeteria food but sophisticated and skilled
chefs and caterers. The total package, including the
music, exhibition cooking and the location in the
center of the service area, is important in
communicating that we want to know what students
like. We also include free chances to win raffle prizes
and food samplings to draw people to our events.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION- Come and enjoy the
party! Free samples and new menus are what we
hope will bring students in.
EVENTS COMING UP- Other events planned for the
semester include the San Gennaro Feast (September
21-23), Hispanic Heritage Month (October 12-14),Octoberfest at Kate and Willies (October 19-21),
Student Appreciation Day (October 27), Vegan
Vegetarian Week (November) and our Fresh Baked Pie
Sale in November during the week of Thanksgiving
(see flyers in the cafeteria). Also coming soon is the
Mediterranean Market (Kosher foods of the
Mediterranean) in the Student Center Atrium.

EVENT CONCEPT- The Cartooning/Animation
Certificate Program is designed to be tailored to the
personal skill and goals of each student. We want to
partner with parents and students and highlight the
support that we offer. We demonstrate the support
by inviting them to join with the faculty, current
students and myself to learn how they will benefit. The dialogue that takes place helps families and their
students to choose what components are right for
them. They appreciate the opportunity to get to
know the instructors and we can then work together
to develop the skills of the student. The complete
experience includes an explanation of all options,
skills that are developed, style of instructors and how
the courses are interrelated.
SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS- By knowing the program
inside and out and meeting every student and their
parent, I think we can personalize what we offer for
the students. Our goal is that they are happy with
the experience that we offer. We need to help make
connections between the technical training and the
support that we offer in terms of development and
learning for our students.
DIFFICULTY YOU FACE- Choosing times, days and
dates for our Open House is very important. We
have tried to choose a weekday and a weekend,
morning and evening, and usually plan to host the
session at least a month before the classes begin in
September and February.
TECHNIQUES THAT WORK- The Director keeps the
program on task, to maintain the audiences interest
and to identify individual situations that belong in a
separate meeting. "We want to offer mentorship for
the families, to guide them and give them feedback,
walk them through the process of the training that
they will get in our program." to introduce their
varied programs to targeted audiences. "My goal is
to get to know the audience, to encourage them to
talk to us. I also want them to know the program
and the instructors do a great job of explaining that.I can also learn from their presentation, and then tie
in the parental involvement component.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION- Hofstra students can
assist instructors and students in many areas of
interest. Contact the Office of Student Employment
or The UCCE office, x35993, for more information.
EVENTS COMING UP- For more information on Youth
Programs at Hofstra, click here
or contact the Office of Youth Programs at the
University College for Continuing Education at x36919.

EVENT CONCEPT- Moving Dutch, sponsored by the
Office of Student Activities, is a program for all
upper-class Hofstra students to provide help and
information to families and new students as they
arrive on campus in September. All of the
participating students help out throughout the week
by physically moving students into housing and
participating in all kinds of events to make them feel
welcome.
SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS- We participate in the
Moving Dutch program because it is a chance to
interact with all of the other student organizations
and the new students. Cadets want to interact with
the University and be part of things, and to give back
to the University and thank them for the
support.
DIFFICULTY YOU FACE- We try to do what we can do
so that students at Hofstra learn more about the
Army and the commitment that we have made to the
program. Our participation in events goes a long way
and helps us all. When people get to know us they
say, "Hey, these cadets are people too and not some
robot who wears a uniform." It shows that we all
have a human face.
TECHNIQUES THAT WORK- We used an army jeep to
draw attention to our information table in one of the
large parking areas near the Residence Halls on move-in day. We participate in other events, such as New
Student Orientation, Transfer Orientation, and College for
a Day to meet and talk with students. We try to get
tables in the Atrium (Student Center) once a week to
allow cadets to speak to students. Our After Action
Review (AAR) is used in the office to capture lessons
learned from events, to evaluate what went well,
what it can be attributed to, what can be done to
improve and to assign responsibilities clearly for the
future to the appropriate people. We also have a
calendar, kept by the Operations Officer, which
allows the staff to synchronize their outreach efforts
with other functions of the office and the Hofstra
academic calendar, and assign responsibilities as
needed.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION- ROTC is great because it
allows you to be a student first - you only put on the
uniform when you train- and the rest of the time you
are who you are. I was involved in a fraternity and
intramural sports, and as a cadet I'm allowed to
wear shorts and sneakers and hang out with my
friends. I think that exposure is great for the cadets
and the student body as well.
EVENTS COMING UP- ROTC has events for the
battalion such as the Award and Commissioning
ceremonies, a Military Ball and a Dining-in formal
dinner. Look for ROTC color guard at the Hofstra vs.
Northeastern football game on November 13 at
3:30pm and at the Homecoming Parade at 10am on
October 16.

THE EVENT CONCEPT- Middle/High School Players
Day on September 25th at 3:30 with Free Admission
for all middle and high school players and coaches.RSVP is via email (athjzb@hofstra.edu) or telephone
463-5187. Special Youth Cheerleading Day
promotions and food drive for Long Island children
with Island Harvest and the Student Government
Association of Hofstra conducting a food drive.
THE SECRET OF YOUR SUCCESS - Working as a team
with other Hofstra departments makes us all stronger
and able to be in touch with students. We have built
connections and cosponsored events (some events
within events, such as the Island Harvest Food
Drive ) with Student Government Association, the
Veterans Alumni, Dean of Students and Office of
Student Activities just to name a few. Football
games are now several events taking place
simultaneously and this appeals to groups, such as
families, teams and students, who have different
needs. Halftime shows, free admission, teams of
players and cheerleaders from the local area on the
field, chances to meet our players, learning cheers
and performing them at the game, and even fireworks
have been part of the mix this year. The key to the
success of these events is word of mouth in the
community. By inviting teams or groups, recognizing
them and letting them play and perform while they
are here, we personalize the experience for them.
They'll tell a friend about it and it also gets parents
out to the games.
DIFFICULTY YOU FACE- Encouraging students who
have not attended a game to come out. Some
students may not attend a game because they are
not rowdy or don't think they will fit in. Also, making
these events successful and getting the word out to
the community with a small staff is difficult.
TECHNIQUES THAT WORK- We used the It's Happening
at Hofstra newsletter (contact University Relations, x36963) to promote our events through November all at the
same time in the same place. We also use the Pride
Newsletter, various email blasts to Alumni, Pride Club,
employees, fans and students. The information is
included in AlumNet (Alumni Relations e-newsletter),
Channel 12's "What's to Do" on Long Island calendar,
the Nassau Coliseum theme tower, Newsday
editorials, the Hofstra Times newsletter from
University Relations to parents of students, student
dorms posters and boards, the Hofstra Chronicle,
marquis in the Student Center Atrium, the Hofstra
Portal, voicemail to resident students and posting of
flyers, and the Hofstra and Hofstra Athletics
websites. The use of give aways such as t-shirts,
posters, stickers and other souvenirs are used at all
events.
STUDENTS PARTICIPATION- Jesse also encourages
students to get involved and learn first hand about
marketing and promotions by volunteering in the
Athletics office and gaining invaluable experience.Hofstra will also be opening the first ever student
section behind the end zone and offering a cash prize
at the Homecoming Game on October 16th at 1:30
p.m., when the Pride take on the University of
Delaware. Admission for all games is FREE for
students and up to three guests with Hofstra ID.

Homecoming (October 16), Take a Kid to the Game
Day (October 30) and Veteran's and Scouts Day
