Educating for Democracy--Preparing Students for Citizenship in Troubled Times through Community Service Learning

Community Service Learning (CSL) is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. CSL aims to build campus-community collaborations that allow participants to cross traditional boundaries and build reciprocal relationships necessary for sustained and knowledgeable democratic action.
ART KEENE is the Terrence Murray Professor in the Commonwealth Honors College and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is the founder and co-director of the UMass Citizen Scholar's Program and the founder and faculty director of the UMass Alliance for Community Transformation. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and the author of dozens of journal articles, books, and book chapters. Among his current research interests are experiential education and engaged pedagogy, grassroots organizing and community development, citizenship and civic engagement, community service learning, Israel and the Israeli kibbutz, and North American archaeology. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan.
