Dr. Peter Seldin

Dr. Peter Seldin is Distinguished Professor of Management Emeritus at Pace University. He has been an academic dean, department chair, and professor of management. He is a well known authority on the evaluation and improvement of college teaching and has been a consultant on higher education issues at more than 350 colleges and universities throughout the United States and in 45 countries around the world. He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and regularly serves as a faculty leader in programs for chairs and deans offered by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).Among his most recent books are A Practical Guide to Documenting Teaching, Research, and Service (with J. Elizabeth Miller, 2009); Evaluating Faculty Performance (with associates, 2006); The Teaching Portfolio, Third Edition (Anker, 2004); The Administrative Portfolio (Anker, 2002), and Changing Practices in Evaluating Teaching (Anker, 1999). Dr. Seldin has contributed articles on the teaching profession, student ratings, educational practices, and academic culture to the New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Change magazine.

For his contributions to the scholarship of teaching he has received honorary degrees from Keystone College (Pennsylvania) and Columbia College (South Carolina). The World Bank has named him a Visiting Scholar to Indonesia, and he was elected a Fellow of the College of Preceptors in England.


A teaching portfolio is a collection of materials that document teaching performance. . . . It is flexible enough to be used for tenure and promotion decisions or to provide the stimulus and structure for self-reflection about areas in need of improvement. . . . Faculty at more than 2000 colleges and universities in the United States have prepared their teaching portfolios. Some did it effectively. Others did not. These interactive workshops will focus on important new lessons learned about portfolios. It will examine what works well and what doesn’t; key strategies, tough decisions; latest research results. The workshop will be highly interactive and will include short presentations, individual reflection, group discussion, and an interactive exercise. Handouts will be substantial, relevant, and immediately useful.
