Special Teaching Leaves

2002-2003

Janice Koch (Department of Curriculum and Teaching)

"Down Under and On Top of the World"
Monday, September 29, 2003

Each year through the Center for Teaching and Scholarly Excellence, Hofstra University awards Special Teaching Leaves for faculty wishing to pursue research related to teaching. Janice Koch, a 2002-2003 Special Teaching Leave recipient, discussed her project in a forum that was open to all.

During her leave in spring 2003, Janice lived, taught, and did research at a university in Central Queensland, Australia. She addressed the implications for professional growth when exploring the possibilities for working in another culture, very distant from one's own world. She also discussed her thinking and planning for a teaching leave that would enable her to pursue her research and expand her own pedagogical understandings. She talked about, and illustrated with photos, her life in Australia and her successes in reaching the goals she had set for herself.
