Dr. David Fryling is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at Hofstra University, where he conducts the select Hofstra Chorale and Hofstra Chamber Singers, and teaches Choral Methods, Choral Conducting, and Advanced Studies in Conducting, as well as graduate level workshops in Choral Conducting and Literature. Dr. Fryling is also an adjunct of the Hofstra School of Education and Allied Human Services, where he supervises all choral music education student teachers during their field placement. In addition to these teaching and conducting responsibilities, he serves as Eastern Division Repertoire and Standards Chair of Youth and Student Activities for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).
During his summers, Dr. Fryling serves as Conductor and Music Director of the World Youth Honors Choir and Festival Choir as Coordinator of Choral Studies for the Interlochen Arts Camp at the Interlochen Center of the Arts in Michigan. This intensive six-week arts camp brings over 2,100 high-school aged visual and performing artists from around the world together in the woods of northern Michigan every summer to live, learn and perform with an unparalleled group of peers and educators.
Before beginning his post at Hofstra, Dr. Fryling served as Music Director and Conductor of the University of Michigan Arts Chorale and Assistant Conductor of the Michigan Chamber Singers, University Choir and the internationally acclaimed Michigan Men's Glee Club. While in Ann Arbor, he was also the Music Director and Conductor of the Michigan Youth Women's Chorus, a year-round all-state honors choir comprising select high school sopranos and altos from across Michigan.
Other recent professional engagements have included numerous Festival and Honor Choirs, choral workshops and adjudications in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Utah, and an appearance with the Michigan Sinfonietta in a performance of Jongen's Organ Concerto Symphonie Concertante. He has been Music Director and Conductor of recent Hofstra Opera Theater productions of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Tchaikovsky's Iolanthe, and Poulenc's Dialogues Des Carmelites, and has served as chorus master of numerous opera productions both at Hofstra and at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Fryling is sought after as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator of choral groups of all ages, and has conducted his own choirs in concerts both here in the U.S. and in Europe. In addition to his activities as a conductor, he maintains an active career as a professional singer in the greater New York Metropolitan area.
