Bio

Dr. Metlay is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Ph.D. Program in Applied Organizational Psychology. He has been active in applied research and evaluation, and industrial/organizational psychology for over 30 years.

Dr. Metlay was trained in experimental psychology at Lehigh University, completing his master's degree in 1962. He then worked as an applied psychologist in government and industry for two years, before returning to Lehigh where he completed his Ph.D. in 1967. Upon graduation, he joined the faculty of Hofstra University as an Assistant Professor of Psychology and as Director of their Master's Program in General Psychology. In 1972 he founded Hofstra's Doctoral Program in Applied Research and Evaluation in Psychology, which was one of the first doctoral programs to emphasize evaluation methodology. From 1981 to 1983 he wrote a series of papers that established the connection between evaluation and management, and marked the introduction of industrial/organizational psychology as a component of the Applied Research Program.

Dr. Metlay's research in the application of psychology to organizational issues is documented in over 100 papers, which have been presented at national conferences such as the American Psychological Association, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and have been published in such refereed journals as the Journal of Experimental Psychology, Group and Organization Studies, and Public Administration Quarterly. In recent years, he has conducted research and consulted for public and private organizations in the areas of customer satisfaction, work group productivity, and training effectiveness. Among the organizations that he has consulted for are AT&T, American Management Association, Avon, BBD&O, Case Corporation, PepsiCo, Pfizer, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and Yale Medical School.
