Dr. Mitus is the program director and an associate professor at Hofstra University in the Rehabilitation Counseling Program. Dr. Mitus joined Hofstra University in 2003 and has taught several courses including; Philosophy and Principles of Vocational Rehabilitation, Multicultural Counseling, Group Counseling, Case Management, Job Placement, Practicum, and Internship. Dr. Mitus served as a co-principal investigator for the Employment Services Systems Research and Training Center, a project that was supported by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). Her project examined workplace socialization from an organizational perspective in relation to employees with disabilities. She is presently collaborating with Kessler Institute in pursuit of other grant opportunities through NIDRR to further her line of research. Other areas of research interests include organizational adjustment of rehabilitation counseling professionals and psychosocial issues of individuals with traumatic brain injury.
Presently Dr. Mitus serves as the project director of two Rehabilitation Services Administration Long-Term Training Grants in Rehabilitation Counseling. These grants are used to provide financial support to students in the program.
Dr. Mitus also served as a consultant to the Southeast Technical Assistance and Continuing Education Center (TACE), which is supported by the U.S. Department of Education’s Rehabilitation Services Administration. The Southeast TACE provides continuing education for rehabilitation counseling professionals in the field.
Dr. Mitus has completed nearly forty presentations at local and national conferences and has several publications on organizational culture and socialization. She also has written book chapters on psychosocial aspects of disability.
Dr. Mitus earned a Masters of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Psychology with an emphasis in rehabilitation counselor education and industrial organizational psychology from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2003.
In her spare time, Dr. Mitus enjoys spending time with family and friends, running, listening to music, cooking, and reading.
