Professor Robert W. Motta received his Ph.D. in psychology from Hofstra University in 1975. He possesses a diploma from APA's American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), with a specialization in cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. He is presently on the examining Board of ABPP, is a licensed clinical psychologist, a certified school psychologist, a certified child abuse identification trainer, and is listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Dr. Motta is past president and secretary treasurer of the School Psychology Division of the New York State Psychological Association. He has published approximately 100 papers and book chapters on adjustment disorders of children and is on the editorial advisory boards of a number of professional journals.
Dr. Motta is the Director of the Psy.D. Program in School-Community Psychology. The Psy.D. is a doctoral degree for psychological practitioners. Graduates of the Psy.D. program are trained to work in facilities such as schools, community mental health centers, drug treatment programs, programs for the physically challenged, psychiatric facilities, homes for the aged, etc. Program graduates are also trained to provide individual psychological services. Dr. Motta is also the Director of Hofstra’s Child & Family Trauma Institute. The institute treats a wide range of childhood and family trauma experiences.
The School-Community Psy.D. program is novel in that it allows students to enter at either a beginning level or at an advanced level. Advanced level students are those who already possess a master's degree in psychology. These students enroll in the program on a part-time basis. Another novel aspect of this program is its balanced emphasis on both the individual service and consultation models of service delivery. Psychologists work in the individual service model when they provide one-to-one psychological interventions. In contrast, psychological consultants work to facilitate change in service delivery systems such that the organization itself is their target for change.
