Professor Levi A. Reiter is currently researching the effects of ear suction ' such as that created by a kiss to the ear canal'on auditory function. To date, he has discovered that sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis (hypersensitivity to sound) result consistently from being kissed on the opening of the ear canal.
Dr. Reiter has developed an instrument for measuring the magnitude and swiftness of the canal suction that is produced by kisses of different strengths and within ear canal of different sizes. The results in the smallest ear canal cavities suggest that ear-kissing may be a cause of sensorineural hearing loss in young children.
