Bio:

Soprano Tammy Hensrud has appeared in opera houses throughout Europe and the US including the Vienna State Opera, Stuttgart Opera, Theatre de Chatelet in Paris, Klagenfurt Stadttheater, the Salzburg Summer and Easter Festivals, the Metropolitan Opera, Cleveland Opera, Opera Orchestra of New York, Spoleto Arts Festival and Liederkranz Opera. Following a successful career with more than 35 roles in the mezzo soprano repertoire to her credit, Ms. Hensrud has embarked on what is quickly becoming an equally successful career as a Soprano. Throughout her career, Ms. Hensrud has enjoyed consistent critical acclaim. Switzerland’s Opernwelt found her to possess “…a remarkably beautiful…voice capable of many colors and nuances…a singer who is also a natural actress.” Her highly applauded European debut in Klagenfurt as Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e I Montecchi came while still in the Vienna State Opera’s Young Artist Program.

Recent highlights include her spectacular debut with the Spoleto Arts Festival 2007 under Maestro Emmanuelle Villaume as Jenny in Kurt Weill’s Der Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, an all Kurt Weill Recital also for Spoleto, Mimi in La Boheme, the title role of Tosca in Puccini’s Tosca, Carmen in Carmen and Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte for Opera of the Hamptons, The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors and concert and recital appearances both in the USA and abroad with the Netherland’s Radio Orchestra, Sud Deutsche Rundfunk Orchestra, American Chamber Ensemble, Fingerlakes Chamber Music Festival Chamber Ensemble, Musica Reginae Productions, Liederkranz Foundation, The Kosciuszko Foundation, The House of the Redeemer Concert Series, Ridotto Concert Series, Old Westbury Gardens Recital Series, Astman International Concert Series, Rutger’s University Sommerfest and at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Concert Hall with the New York Virtuosi, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Mid America Productions and the Si-Yo Society. A most versatile artist, Ms. Hensrud has performed a one woman show, Chanson to Cabaret at the Lucille Lortel Theater in New York, NY, and has recently appeared as the Soprano soloist at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Christmas and Easter services and concerts. As a proponent of contemporary music, Ms. Hensrud has sung many World Premiere Performances both in the USA and in Europe and is in demand as an interpreter of Kurt Weill.

Ms. Hensrud began her career as a cellist and holds the Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello Performance, Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Master of Arts degrees from the University of North Dakota. She received a Fulbright Scholarship and continued graduate studies in Voice abroad at the Opernschule Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart, Germany where she received an Artist Diploma. She has also studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, the Franz Liszt Musik Akadamie in Weimar, Germany, L’ecole Hindemith, in Vevey, Switzerland and holds a Fremdsprache Diplom in German from the Goethe Institute in Munich, Germany.

Ms. Hensrud has served as Adjunct Professor of Voice at Hofstra University since 2004 instructing both undergraduate and graduate students in Classical Voice Training, Musical Theater and Cross-Over Styles emphasizing all aspects of technical development and tonal production through the study of traditional methods and repertoire. She advises and prepares students for major roles in Opera and Musical Theater Productions and in Junior and Senior Recital programs. Additionally she has taught Diction for Singers, instructing students in the use of IPA, and serves as a Faculty advisor for the Women’s Accapella Group. Ms Hensrud has served as an adjudicator on several competition panels including the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Division and as a Guest Clinician and Master Class Teacher throughout the United States. Ms. Hensrud’s students are consistently awarded leading roles with prestigious Young Artist Programs and top prizes in vocal competitions to include the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Five Towns Arts Council Music Competition and The Long Island Masterworks competition.
