He received his Ph.D. (1989) from the Graduate School and University Centre of the City University of New York; his doctoral dissertation, El crótalon en la tradición lucianesca, explores the classic sources of El crótalon and other dialogues of the Spanish late Middle Ages and Renaissance, specifically tracing the contributions of II Century Syrio-Greek philosopher Lucian of Samosata and establishing the concept of a Lucianesque "tradition" in the Spanish Golden Age. He also holds a Master's degree (1976) and a Bachelor's degree (1973) from Queens College, (CUNY), both with a major in Spanish Literature.
Dr. García Osuna completed his primary and secondary education in Las Palmas, in Spain's Canary Islands, the place where his family originated and where he grew up.
He has published several articles in scholarly journals, and among his most recent books are a dual-language annotated translation of the Spanish classic Lazarillo de Tormes (London: McFarland Press, 2005), Incidents of Travel on the Road to Santiago (N.Y: McGraw-Hill, 1998), The Cuban Filmography, 1897-2001 (London: McFarland, 2002), and an annotated translation of Jacques Roumain's La montagne ensorcelée (NY: New Hemisphere Press, 2005 -2nd printing 2007-). Dr. García Osuna is an enthusiastic cyclist, among other things having five times completed the pilgrimage Road to Santiago de Compostela, traversing all of northern Spain from the French border to the Atlantic. He regularly teaches graduate level courses in Medieval and Renaissance Literature in Brooklyn College, as well as the History of the Spanish Language. For many years he was director of the KCC-CUNY Overseas Academic Program in Spain. Because of his chosen field –the Classic sources of Spanish Medieval and Renaissance Literature- he has attained a working knowledge of Koine Greek, Latin and Italian, and is also conversant with Spanish regional languages. Additionally, Dr. García Osuna is Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at the City University of New York/Kingsborough, and is the recipient of the Hispanic Heritage Award (2004) granted by the Town of Hempstead, NY, and of the Educator of the Year Award (2007), granted by the Fundación Hispanoamericana.
