Bio:

Julie Agris joined Hofstra University in the Summer of 2011 as an Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Master of Health Administration Program.  Dr. Agris teaches Health Law and Ethics in addition to Health Policy and Legislation in the Master of Health Administration Program.  In addition, she is an Assistant Professor at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and Co-lead of their Continuum of Care Curriculum Design Team.  Prior to her current appointment at Hofstra, Dr. Agris served as Corporate Compliance Director and Privacy Officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System (“Health System”).  She served in this capacity for the North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Hospital, Cohen Children’s Hospital and Zucker Hillside Hospital.  Dr. Agris has published and presented in the areas of health, law and policy and brings broad experience in these areas to Hofstra University. 

Dr. Agris began her career leading the health law division of a private law firm in which she was responsible for all aspects of civil litigation.  She subsequently became Legislative Counsel to the Vermont General Assembly healthcare committees where she provided legal counsel to Legislators on a nonpartisan basis.  During her tenure with the Legislature, she was selected to pursue her PhD as a US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Training Fellow.  Her doctoral dissertation concentrated on aspects of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  After serving as a legal intern at The White House, The Supreme Court on behalf of CBS Evening News, and the U.S. Department of Justice, her career progressed from state to federal government as a healthcare attorney for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where she provided legal counsel to several of the Department’s programs, including Medicare and Medicaid. She also served as a technical authority on matters related to HIPAA and was selected to receive a prestigious Special Act Award for her work at CMS.  Dr. Agris subsequently served as Assistant General Counsel to the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Compliance Officer to Vantage Holding Company, LLC, a large consortium of hospitals partnering in shared health care services.  She was responsible for providing legal and compliance counsel to the Board of Directors, senior management, and employees.  In addition, she educated students in health and social policy as an adjunct faculty member of Penn State University, The Behrend College. 

Dr. Agris earned her PhD in Health Policy from the Schneider Institute for Health Policy, Brandeis University, her JD from the Washington College of Law, American University, her LLM from the Health Law and Policy Institute, University of Houston Law Center, and graduated, as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, from the Honors Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
