Bio:
For the past fifteen years I have been engaged as a sociologist in action research on domestic violence in the South Asian immigrant community in the United States. I have worked closely with domestic violence organizations, particularly Sakhi for South Asian women in New York City. My research and activism focused on the cultural and structural factors that shape abused South Asian immigrant women's experiences of marital violence in the United States and the roles of South Asian women's organizations in addressing domestic violence. The publications and presentations from this research have been used by scholars, activists, community based organizations, policy makers, lawyers and students. It helped shift domestic violence in South Asian communities from a private individual problem to a public issue.
My current research investigates the causes and consequences of the growth of the Indian call center industry. I am particularly interested in understanding the working conditions and cultural contexts for Indian call center workers working for multinational companies. Drawing upon the Indian case I also examine the similarities and differences between globalization of services and manufacturing and its implications for workers in the changing global economy.
