Bio:
Dr. David Weiss, Associate Professor, Department of Health Professions & Family Studies, and former Director of Graduate Health Administration Program at Hofstra University. He received his undergraduate degree at Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus and went on to receive his M.A. in Sociology & Social Psychology from Vanderbilt University and his Ph.D. in Medical Sociology and Health Services Research from University of Pittsburgh. His career has been one involving teaching, administration, research, and community/advocacy service.
Teaching: While on faculty at Tusculum College, Greeneville, TN, Dr. Weiss received the “Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award”. At Long Island University, Dr. Weiss earned the "Faculty of the Year Award" at LIU: C.W. Post Campus from the Office of Professional Experience and Placement for his work cultivating internship opportunities and career placements for students, as well as receiving the university’s “David Newton Award for Teaching Excellence”. He also established and served as Faculty Advisor to the student chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Administration: Dr. Weiss has held several administrative positions in both higher education and the private sector. At Long Island University, he served as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, as well as Assistant Dean in two units, the Faculty of Business, Public Administration and Accountancy, and the School of Business and Public Administration; at Hofstra University, he directed the graduate MHA Program in Health Administration. He also was affiliated with a private summer camp & school for developmentally disabled children for 22 years, serving on staff and as its Assistant Director. In addition, he maintains a management consulting practice.
Community/Advocacy Service: During a 1991 sabbatical, Dr. Weiss was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, England, serving on a research team that investigated how to integrate general undergraduate and professional education. Dr. Weiss is particularly proud of his teaching related community service and is a frequent public speaker and public television guest addressing such social concerns as the role of public hospitals, health care reform, Medicare, Medicaid, and health care ethics. In addition, he has served on such community service Boards as the Visiting Nurse Service, the Long Island Foundation for Hospice Care & Research, the Long Island Ethics Network, the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, Emblem Health, HIP of New York, Vytra Health Services of Long Island, and Eaton's Neck Youth Basketball League.
Research: Dr. Weiss has conducted research and published journal articles and textbook chapters in the areas of aging, hospital organization, access to health services, medical sociology, and ethical aspects of health care.
