Bio:

Frederick A. Smith, MD, is Director of Clinical Ethics, supervising Bioethics consultations and teaching at 3 North Shore-LIJ Health System flagship hospitals – North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Cohen Children’s Medical Center – and at Nassau University Medical Center.  He practiced general internal medicine for 25 years, and then geriatric and palliative medicine for 5 years – teaching medical and pharmacy students, residents, fellows and nurses, and caring for both insured and indigent patients in academic medical centers. 

In 2010-2011, he undertook a Bioethics Fellowship at NSLIJHS, and earned a Certificate in Bioethics from the Montefiore-Einstein Bioethics Center (where one of his teachers was Professor Janet Dolgin). 

Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Ethics of the Department of Medicine of NSUH-LIJMC and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, where he has helped in the design of ongoing longitudinal courses in Communication Skills and in Professionalism, Ethics, Humanism and Law, and mentors medical students in the interactive learning of both subjects.
